Hugh Charles Evans, 73

Hugh Charles Evans, 73, of 457 Hawthorne Drive, Lancaster, Pennsylvania 17603 died Tuesday June 5, 2007, at Lancaster Regional Medical Center.

Born in Milwaukee, WI, he was the son of the late Hugh Smith Evans and Anne Walker Evans. He was the husband of Deone (McGarry) Evans and they were married in August 1956.

In 1962, Dr. Evans joined the Department of English at Franklin and Marshall College, teaching courses in dramatic literature and theater practice, and directing and designing lights for productions in the Green Room Theater.  In 1971, he co-founded a separate Department of Drama at the College.  Dr. Evans retired in 1993. During his time at F&M, he directed 36 productions, ranging from Greek tragedy to contemporary comedy, in the Green Room. He received his BS from Wisconsin State College, now the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, where he was the 1956 Commencement Speaker. He then received his MA in theatre in 1957 and his PhD in theatre in 1963 from Stanford University.

Dr. Evans was the Founding and Artistic Director of the Fulton Summer Repertory Theatre from 1968-1974. He also acted and directed for 13 seasons at the Oregon Shakespearean Festival, in Ashland Oregon. Dr. Evans won many awards, including Franklin & Marshall’s Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award in 1979; the Lancaster Summer Arts Festival’s Award of Honor in 1979; and the West Coast Critics Association’s Outstanding Direction Award for The Winter’s Tale at the Oregon Shakespearean Festival.

Dr. Evans loved flowers and to garden and adored his cats, Maria and Alexandra.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his sister, Margaret Christman, of Milwaukee; brother-in-law Kenneth Vogt, husband of Helen; and many nephews, nieces, great nephews, and great nieces.

A memorial service will be held in the Green Room Theater of Franklin and Marshall College at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2007. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dr. Evan’s memory to Franklin and Marshall College, Office of College Advancement, P.O. Box 3003, Lancaster, PA 17604-3003. Funds received will be used for a garden in his memory at the College. Arrangements by the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, Millersville.
