Dear Ray, Christine, Clair Danyo & Bohdan Matkowsky,
This message goes out to you from the heart & on Valentine’s Day letting you know how deeply sorry I am for your loss of such a wonderful person in your family ~ Helen Matkowsky-Danyo….(Olenko to me!)
She was a special friend & Ukrainian classmate of mine which I had the pleasure of meeting in 1964 (newly arriving to the USA from Argentina without knowing the English language). SSCyril & Methodius Catholic Grammar School in Greenpoint, NY was where we attended along with many other wonderful Polish, Slavic, Irish, German, Chinese, Puerto Rican classmates graduating in 1966 to face the unknown world of High School scattering thereafter in all the many different locations it took us. Strangly enough, we re-connected again to hold a Grammar School Reunion (un-heard of, to many) with the 2-8th grade classmates from 8-1 & 8-2 (72 total) we could miraculously locate & gather.  We ended up at St. Anthony’s Catholic School on Manhattan Avenue, where our 8th grade favorite teacher, Sister Mary Dorothea was part of. Helen, William Modzelewski & myslef were part of the team to gather whoever we could to go forward with our mission in re-connecting again after so many years in hopes that we can recognize each other again from childhood to adulthood….humor played an important part for the 3 of us. No words can describe/express the fun we had with this puzzle to bring it all together, meet again in life & I’m sure William will agree with me, that it was a total pleasure working with someone as special as Helen!  Sometimes, we don’t realize the value of people until they are gone….but somehow, I personally knew the value of that beautiful smile connected with her 2 cute dimples when I first met her & spoke to her in our Uki language…All I can say is: GOD is so good with blessings & only time & maturity makes us realize how lucky  w e   r e a l l y   a r e !  from Irene Nieves Palkaninec, Helen’s Ukrainian Classmate from Grammar School:
