Harry F. Long, 87
Harry F. Long, 87, formerly of 2511 Chestnutview Drive, Lancaster, passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Landis Homes.
He was the husband of Teresa L. Iemmallo Long, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage this past May 3rd. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Jonas and Catherine Boas Long.
Harry had worked as a laboratory technician at Armstrong World Industries for30 years, retiring in 1988. He had also worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, PPL, and the US Post Office.
A US Army veteran of World War II, he served as a PFC heavy machine gunner and a combat engineer in the European Theater in the campaigns of Normandy, the Rhineland, the Ardennes, and Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for clearing a bridge and roadway of mines while under enemy artillery and small arms fire. He served in the 4th Armored Division under Patton and received the Distinguished Unit Citation.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church where he was a choir member.
Harry had attended Millersville University.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Stephanie married to Stephen McBride of Lancaster; a grandson Michael H. McBride; a great grandson Stephen J. Jones, and a brother, Robert Long of Neffsville. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michelle A. Jones and a brother, Kenneth Long.
Friends will be received on Tuesday, January 5, 2009 at Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster, PA with the funeral service to follow at 11AM. Interment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery on Thursday, January 7th. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Harry’s memory to the Alzheimers Assn., South Central PA Chapter, 3544 N.
