I am shocked to just hear of Waynes passing from Dale Aulthoues. Wayne and Dale were close freinds of mine through elementary school, boy scouts and high school. Wayne served as an usher at my wedding to my wife, Jean, aslo now gone. Although I didn’t keep up with Wayne for several years while we were both working, I always remembered him. Who couldn’t? It is a great comfort that in recent years we got in contact and enjoyed visiting whenever I got east to Lancaster. Waynes passing leaves a great hole in my heart but, with the knowledge of Christ’s promise of everlasting life, I know we will see him again someday. Joyce, please be assured of my profound sorrow for your sudden loss but be glad that he passed without prolonged suffering. Sometimes it is hard to accept, but the Lord is merciful and be assured that Wayne is well off. Again, my sincere condolences.

Last week, a great man left this world and I am deeply sadden by his sudden departure.  Wayne and father became friends in elementary school. When they were in high school, Wayne and my dad along, with three of their closest friends, called themselves the five Scholars.
Wayne has taught me three valuable life lessons, just by observing how he led his life throughout the years.  He showed me how to have a long lasting friendship with hard work.  He had over a 70 years friendship with my dad. They both had to work at keeping in touch over the years.  I will always remember Wayne’s famous “five minute” visits when he and Joyce came to Lancaster.  Wayne showed me that you can have a career with something you have a passion for.  His love affair with trains led him to be happily working on the railroad for all of his adult life.  He also showed me that it is possible to have a long and loving marriage.  Every time I saw Wayne and Joyce, I saw a great love between them.
Joyce and David – You are both in my thoughts and prayers.  I am so sorry for your loss.
Love,

Joyce-I was so surprised and saddened to hear of Wayne’s sudden death.  I always referred to him as my youngest cousin.  With both of us the youngest of Anna and Elizabeth, we held down the role of “baby of the family” quite well.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and your son.  Take care.  Brenda McKonly

My dad told me many stories about Wayne and the other “five scholars” from East Lampeter School.  Dad called Wayne one of his best friends.  It was always easy to see why.  Wayne was quick with a warm smile, a good story, and a helping hand.  His passion for trains was only overshadowed by his passion for family and friends.  He was a lifelong friend to my dad and our entire family.
I know I speak for my late father, my mother, and all my siblings when I say that Wayne, Joyce, and Dave are friends who are family.  Joyce and Dave, thank you for sharing Wayne with us all these years and for the role that all of you have had in our lives.  We’ll remember Wayne always.

We often referred to Wayne as “Big Guy”…big heart, big smile.  He and Joyce were ambassadors for our class (East Lampeter, 1956) and also Lancaster County.  He kept us informed about class members and the events surrounding Lancaster County.  He held the disctinction of serving as the resource/memorabilia contact for the alumnae association…and, one of “The Five Scholars” who became life-long friends along with their wives.  The bond that Wayne forged, between all of us, was exceeded only by his genuine friendship and positive disposition.
Wayne will be missed by all who knew him.  Those of us who called him a ‘trusted friend’ shall miss him greatly.  We shall cherish many fantastic memories.  We trust that God will embrace Joyce, David, and other family members with His Love & Grace, during their sorrow & grief.
Always Friends,

“GG1” is the nickname that J Elias Fritz, former principal of the East Lampeter Schools, gave to sophomore Wayne Frey, based on admiration of his unique knowledge of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Sitting in our class, the distant sound of a train could reach our ears. Wayne would immediately identify the name of the train, where it was coming from, where it was heading to and if it was on time. He also knew the type of locomotive, which in most cases was a GG1.
Wayne turned this love of trains into an important and responsible management positions on the PRR, Penn Central,Conrail & Norfolk-Soutern. This passion and knowledge of trains never subsided and became the instrument which provided an excellent life for him and his family.
He was my classmate and always a best friend. I am deeply saddened by his passing. His absence has produced a huge void in my life. However, we will never be able to know the horrible shock that his family experienced from his sudden departure.  Wayne was always the picture of health, which gives his passing all the more of being a horrible tragedy. We pray that God will give his family the strength to survive the sorrow that now consumes them.  We hope that the expressions of love that we all have for Wayne will help to soften their mountain of grief.
I believe that God needed a knowledgeable railroader and snatched “GG1” from our lives.

Marie & Dale Aulthouse
