Germaine A. Bakken, 90
Germaine A. Bakken, 90, formerly of Oxford, died Friday October 19th at Pleasant View Retirement Community in Manheim.
She was the wife of the late Ward E. Bakken, who died in 1986. Born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Germaine was the daughter of the late John and Emma Thill Steffes.
She had been an English teacher in the Oxford Area School District for 15 years, teaching from the early 1960s to the mid 1970s. Prior to Oxford, she had taught physical education in Wisconsin for 25 years.
Germaine was an avid fisherperson and swimmer, teaching swimming to countless children in the Oxford area in her own swimming pool. She had also studied dance and received lessons from renowned dancer, Martha Graham.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oxford.
Germaine is survived by 4 sons: Dr. John S. married to Maryalis Bakken of Exton, Dr. William W. married to Marchelle Bakken of Lancaster, James M. married to Agnes Bakken of Malvern, and Daniel L. married to Arlene Bakken of Oxford. She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren: Beth, Daniel E., Michael, Nicholas, Peter, and Grace Bakken.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Mass on Friday October 26th at 11AM from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 203 Church Rd., Oxford, PA 19363. Interment in the Oxford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Germaine’s memory to the Milagro House, 669 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, PA 17603. Arrangements by the Charles Snyder Funeral Home and Chapel, Lititz PA 560-5100.
