Geraldine S. Weidel, 97

February 24, 2016

Geraldine S. Weidel, 97, of Lancaster passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Brethren Village. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Wayne and Anna (Andes) Stauffer. She was married to the late J. Milton Weidel who passed away in 1995.

Gerry was an active, lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Neffsville, where she taught Sunday School and made pies for the annual Strawberry Festival. In her later years, Gerry was active as a St. Peter’s Sage. Every Sunday, she could be found in “her” pew in the center-rear of the sanctuary. Gerry was also an Honored Lady of Court #70, Lancaster, of the Order of Amaranth and a 59-year Member of James Buchanan Chapter #315, Lancaster, Order of the Eastern Star.

Gerry was active in the Neffsville community. She volunteered countless hours as a member of the Neffsville Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary, preparing thousands of gallons of chicken corn soup and rolling countless pie crusts for fire company fundraisers. Gerry worked for many years as the head cook of the former Neff School, retiring in 1982. Gerry went out of her way to accommodate the students and faculty, even going so far as to bake a fresh batch of cookies when the cafeteria once ran out of dessert before all students were served.

Most important, Gerry was someone who brought people together and worked tirelessly for her family. She spent her life hosting family dinners, picnics and spur-of-the-moment get-togethers. Her family still marvels that–at age 78–she spent a hot August afternoon helping them unload tobacco. Even well into her 80’s Gerry could be found (much to the chagrin of her children) sledding down a steep hill, “wiping out” and sitting in the snow laughing until someone helped her to her feet. Gerry’s positive, can-do approach to life is best expressed by one of her grandchildren: “I like going to Grandma’s because she does whatever we want to do.”

Surviving are her children, Margaret W. wife of Richard Sprott of Potomac, MD, Joseph M., Jr. husband of Sandra Weidel of Columbia, Shirley W. Dombach of Lancaster, Phyllis W. wife of Robert Hollinger of Lancaster; 8 grandchildren, Lynn, Debbie, Brian, Amy, Sarah, Grant, Rachel, Aaron; 10 great-grandchildren, Zack, Nick, Sydney, Rhys, Quinn, Nolan, Bryce, Maeve, Henry, Norah and a host of loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Kenneth, Dorothy, Irene, Pauline, Vera, Anna Mary, and LaVerne.

Funeral Services for Gerry will be held at 11AM on Monday, February 29, 2016 at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Rd, Lancaster, PA 17601. A viewing will be held Sunday evening at the church from 6-8PM and again on Monday from 10-11AM. Interment in St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. Please omit flowers. Contributions in Gerry’s memory may be made to the church at the above address.
