George E. Maloney, 92

February 12, 1929 - April 29, 2021

It is with deep sadness that we share that George E. Maloney, 92, of Lancaster, passed into Eternity on April 29, 2021. Born in DuBois, PA, George was the son of the late John and Margaret (Kotzbauer) Maloney. He was the husband of the late Clara A. Maloney.

George’s ambition during his high school years was to become a Coast Guard Officer, and that ambition was fulfilled when he was accepted as a Cadet in 1947. After four years of study, he graduated with a degree in Marine Engineering and commenced his career. His initial assignments were all sea-going until 1954 when he met his future bride, Clara Ann Rehaume, a nurse at the Alaska Native Hospital in Sitka. They married on 12 February 1955 in Sitka. In short order his family grew to six children: Teresa, Patricia, Maureen, Kathleen (deceased), James, and Ann.

In 1958, George was assigned to the N.S. Savannah, the world’s first nuclear-powered merchant ship. He remained with the program until 1970 when he was transferred to Coast Guard headquarters, from where he retired after 25 years. He then accepted a position with Travelers Insurance doing risk evaluations. He retired from Travelers in 1989 and settled in Lancaster. His life has been filled spending time with his fifteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; woodworking; traveling; landscaping; canning; painting; genealogy; taking lots of pictures and videos; and keeping in touch with his family through texting, emailing, and visiting through Viber and Zoom.

George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Clara, his daughter Kathleen, his infant son Michael, and his brothers Billy [infant], Eugene, and Roy, and his sister, Margaret.

Due to the current COVID restrictions, a private, family-only Mass of Christian Burial and interment will be held. We ask for your prayers, rosaries, and Chaplets of Divine Mercy for the soul of our father and grandfather.

Memorial contributions in George’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; Hospice & Community Care, PO Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604; or a charity of your choosing.

The private Mass being celebrated for George can be viewed through Livestream on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at 11:30 AM, and in the future at the link that will appear below on Saturday shortly before 11:30 AM.

CAPT Maloney was a long-time supporter of the Lancaster Latin Mass Community.  When the Latin Mass returned to the area in 2008 after many decades, it was CAPT Maloney who kindly trained the first group of altar servers on how to serve the Traditional Latin Mass.  He was one of the few who remembered the old rite and his military training was perfect preparation to relate the precision and discipline required to serve at Holy Mass.  Without men like George, it would have been impossible to begin the important work of restoring the Traditional Mass in Lancaster!
As the father of five boys, I owe CAPT Maloney a great debt as the gentlemen he trained later trained me and my boys on how to serve.  They will give him a final honor by reverently serving his Requiem Mass this Saturday.  He was a lion of a man with tremendous courage but also with a gentle and kind manner of instruction to help younger men and fathers like myself be better men!   He earned my respect and admiration and I enjoyed seeing him and his late wife in the pew each Sunday for many years. As his wife’s health declined, George provided a sterling example of his attentive care for her and set yet another powerful example to husbands in our community.
Rest in peace, Captain!  Please be assured of my prayers that your soul makes its way swiftly to heaven to be greeted by Our Blessed Lord with the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant”!

I am one of the receptionists and my husband is one of the Security officers at WCV.  We were both always so impressed by the kindness of George’s family, and how they faithfully visited with and cared for their father.  May George rest in the peace of our Lord.  You are all in our prayers.

Mr. Maloney will be remembered by those who knew him as a great Catholic gentleman. He and his wife were always an inspiration for their kindness, quiet devotion, and steadfastness in the Faith.  May he rest in the peace of the Lord at whose altar he served so well. In the gracious words of St. Thomas More: “May we merrily meet in Heaven.”

George Maloney’s passing leaves giant place Kotzbauer family history and in the memory of those who knew and appreciated his Coast Guard service, his family  and life  in general. I may be the only one who remembers his tap dancing at the Avenue Theatre stage.  I have a photo certifying  it. Those were the days.  Bob Kotzbauer

I would like to express my sympathy to the family of George.   Such a sweet, gentle man who always had a smile to share.   I live in RR at Woodcrest and always marvelled at the family and how they took such good care for their beloved father.   Please know that you are in my prayers at this sad time.
