George A. Kandra, 87

George A. Kandra, 87, of Lancaster, PA, passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Moravian Manor of Lititz.

He was the husband of Faye E. Griffith Kandra, with whom he celebrated 61 years of marriage this past August 18th.  Born in Shamokin, PA, he was the son of the late Michael and Jennie Novack Kandra.

George was a professional civil engineer who started his career with the N.Y. Central Railroad.  He served as Director of Public Works for Batavia, N.Y., Lancaster and Allentown, PA and Manchester, CT. ;  He also worked for the engineering firms of Praeger Kavanaugh in N.Y.C. and Kandra, Greenleaf, Huth in Allentown, PA.

A Penn State alumnus, George was a member of the Blue Band and earned his Masters of Business Administration from the University.   He enjoyed sports and in his younger years had played baseball and basketball.   A  talented musician, he played piano, clarinet and sax and had been a former member of OUR Band in Shamokin.  He was a member of the Elks Club 1057, a past president of the Kiwanis Club in New York and a volunteer in the Hempfield School District.

A US Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he served as a Sgt. and was a Radio Operator and Gunner on a B-29 Superfortress.

He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife, Faye, he is survived by his daughters: Jill Ann married to Richard Mowery of Landisville, Janet Louise married to Clint Dix of Stow, OH, Jeanne Elizabeth married to Charles Spiegel of Hershey, and Jacqueline Marie married to Robert Wagner of Slatington, PA; his 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, and by his two brothers: Michael married to Lorraine Kandra of Newark, DE, and Myron married to Kay Kandra of Annapolis, MD. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Jean Sanzotto and Helen Beidler.

Friends and family will be received on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 from 10-11AM at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Rd., Lancaster, PA 17601 with the Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11AM and  interment at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at 1:30PM.  In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in George’s memory to the Blessed John The XXIII School Fund in care of St. John Neumann at the above address (payable to the church) or to the Moravian Manor Benevolent Fund, 300 W.
