Elwood G. Baker

Elwood Gamber Baker passed away at home, in Millersville, on April 11. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Elwood is survived by his wife, Naomi Baker (Charles); son James E. Baker and his wife, Dawn; son Robert C. Baker and his wife, Laura; granddaughter Jessica, her partner, Frank, and great-granddaughter Lynn; grandsons James and Ian; and niece Fay Miller and her family. He was pre-deceased by his much-loved daughter, Bonnie Masters, his brother Robert Baker, and his sister Pauline Shopf.

Born in Millersville, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Selena Gamber Baker. Elwood graduated from Penn Manor High School in 1949, where he played Varsity basketball for four years. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from October 1952 to November 1954, and was posted to White Sands Missile Range and Trinity site, in New Mexico.

After his military service, Elwood graduated from DeVry Institute of Technology, in Chicago, with an Associate Electronics degree. His career began at Burroughs Corp., then took him to Westinghouse, where he worked as a Field Engineer in the Defense Contract Division for 22 years. In 1968 Elwood spent three months on the USS Halibut as an Electronics Technical Advisor to the Navy. Their mission, classified at the time, was to locate a sunken Soviet submarine. He finished his career at TCOM, as an Aerostat Flight Director working on surveillance balloons.

"Bake", as his family and friends called him, was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed getting away to Vermont and to his hunting camp in PA, loved a good game of cards or croquet with family and friends, watching sports, and tending his gardens. He had an abundance of curiosity and a great enthusiasm for life. He will be deeply missed.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Bake’s memory to your favorite charity. To send an online condolence, please visit SnyderFuneralHome.com. Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory 872-5041

Dear Naomi and family,

The friendship between Mom and Dad, you and Bake has extended to Steve and I and Laura and Bob.  It is a special connection and we look forward to those weeks every summer.  Bake’s presence will be greatly missed, but we know he will be there in spirit.

To Naomi and all of Bake’s loving Family,
I don’t know most of the family, but I do remember you, Naomi, and Bake. I most remember the Charles Reuion get togethers. You came away from them with a very full belly and belly full of laughter. Bake was a big source of that laughter. I remember that he played games with us so it wouldn,t get so— booooring! It never was boring.

You are in my thoughts and prayers. May God walk with you, by you side, and I know Bake will be there too.
Love,
Sis (Janet)
("Johnnie’s" daughter and Ronnie’s sister)

To Bake’s family,

Bake and Naomi have been friends with my family for over 50 years. Over those years we had many fun filled times together. Bake was such a memorable personality and his enthusiasm for life was fun to share.

My children and I have great memories of the family gatherings. It’s easy to recall a time when Bake made us laugh.

My dad and Bake had a friendship that is rarely found in a lifetime. I believe they are together now continuing that bond.

Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss.

Naomi and family.

I cant begin to tell you how sad I am to hear of Bakes passing. You have all been such a huge part of the Sweeny family that it will leave a huge hole. I am thankful that fate brought our families together and have so many fond memories of great times at camp. I know that Dad, Bake and Bonnie are hitting the best fishin holes and playing some cards and are smiling down on us with pride. Please know that you are all always welcome anytime you need that escape to VT. Fishin the ole bass hole will never be the same but every bass I catch from now on I know will probably have been sent from Bake. The Sky has another bright star to shine over us.

Jay Sweeny

Mrs. Baker,
I know that your sorrow is deep right now, but I can’t help but think it comforted your husband to know he would soon join Bonnie.  That must comfort you too.
I look forward to talking to you soon.  I sent my contact info through Bonnie’s memorial site.
Love,
Tia
