Elmer worked at Hamilton Watch, Schick in Lancaster, Dart Container in Leola, and HamTech/Bulova in Lancaster city before retiring.
He served in the US Navy from 1941 until 1947 in the South Pacific in the Mariana Islands, Guadalcanal and Treasury Islands aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga and U.S.S. Lexington aircraft carriers.
He loved hunting and fishing and spent many years coaching the Lancaster Recreation Junior Smallbore Rifle Team to state and national recognition. He also competed and coached at the senior level and served as a range officer at the National Smallbore Championships. In later life, Elmer spent a lot of time traveling around the US and Canada taking photographs of wildflowers and wildlife with photography friends. Dear Schweitzer Family,   I will never forget Elmer, years ago Elmer & Anna woud come in to T.Burk & Co. Deli Restaurant for lunch.  I worked there at the time. They were the sweetest and kindest couple, they always seemed so in love.   They always made our day when they would came in.  When Anna passed away he was so sad, he did not come as often but we sure missed him.  I sent him cards and checked on him occasionally, but then lost contact with him.  He was such a kind man and we enjoyed many conversations about when he was overseas, his family and the special love they had for each other.  Prayers and my deepest sympanthy to your family, my life was blessed to have met him, it was certainly a “Life Well-Loved”.  Deepest Sympathy,
Barbi Cottingham

Dear Schweitzer Family,
I was sorry to hear about your dad.  He was a constant, reassuring presence for my family for many years.  Although I was a lackluster rifle student and a poor shot, I have fond memories of his patient instruction and enthusiasm for the sport.  Truly, he believed that girls could be as good as boys on the range. We were lucky indeed to count him as a mentor and a family friend.
