Edward “Ted” Sunbery, 73

2/19/1947

Edward “Ted” William Sunbery, 73, of Lancaster, PA, passed away November 22 due to complications of a stroke. He was born February 19, 1947 in Shamokin, PA to the late Edward & Eleanor (Curran) Sunbery.

Ted was a 1965 graduate from Middletown Area High School and then went on to graduate from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science earning a B.S. in Pharmacy. He enjoyed a long, successful career in the pharmaceutical industry which included retail, manufacturing, product development, consulting, and teaching.

Ted had a keen scientific mind and delighted in learning. He enjoyed amusing his grandchildren with corny jokes and spending meaningful time with each one of them. He went above and beyond to help his neighbors and friends with tasks big and small. He was quick with a smile and conversed with everyone he met.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carol, and daughters Laura (Stephen) Russell and Ellen (Lawrence) Bowlin, and grandchildren Matthew, Kate, Joshua, Carolyn (Russell) and Grace, Joy, Hope (Bowlin). Ted was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to all. He brought joy to many lives and will be deeply missed.

Due to COVID restrictions, a memorial service will be held at a later date.

I am so sorry to learn of Ted’s passing. He was my next-door neighbor for many years.  Ted and I spent many hours comparing notes on home maintenance, often times with strange success.  Our most memorable escapade was when Ted hurried me off to the hospital when I nearly cut off my finger.  Great memories.  I will miss him.

I’m so sorry for your sudden loss. I am praying continually for you, Carol, and your family.
I met your husband a few times when you came to church with Ellen and her family in Michigan. He always had a warm smile when he greeted me. I also remember when Ellen and I went to PA to see the “Jesus” show with a few church friends, you and your husband welcomed us so sweetly into your home and prepared a nice meal for us. I could see the delight in your husbands eyes when we came and that he liked to entertain and chat.
I know he will be extremely missed.

Carol and Family,
The sudden loss of a patriarch is always difficult to deal with no matter how much time has passed. Only knowing Ted for short time, he went out his way to make our family feel more than welcomed especially since we shared a house number.
I know that he leaves a set of memories filled with laughter, joy, and happiness. Use those to get you through and the rest will come with time.
We are here for whatever you may need, even if it’s for another laugh on the evening walks. Your neighbors at 328…

Dear Carol and Family,
Ted will be greatly missed in the neighborhood. Whether we were chatting on one of your walks or working together as neighbors and friends in the yard cutting trees, Ted always had such a nice way about him. Always eager to help out or offer of himself and his neatly organized tools. It was so nice of Ted to allow Adam to mow your lawn over the years as I know he will miss you very much as well. We are here if you have any needs Carol. Please don’t hesitate to reach out. Love,

My condolences to Carol and the family.  I’ve known Ed since grade school.  He was always a sweet, considerate gentleman, always ready to hold a conversation.  Even though I only was able to see him at the reunions, he will definitely be missed.

Words truly cannot fully express how fortunate I was, how grateful I am, that Ted and I had the strongest of possible friendships for 65 years–through childhood, adolescence and adulthood. We shared every thought, every aspiration, every experience with each other. Ted was a totally good and kind human being. I will miss him most sorely.

Coming from Maryland, I joined MAHS in my senior year. My new friends in Middletown were Bill Lander, Ted Sunbery and Mike Smith.
16 Nov was a bad day. Early that morning, a great Army friend emailed to say that his wife and daughter has been killed near Rockingham, NC in a horrific traffic accident, caused by a reckless driver. Both wife and daughter were pronounced dead at the scene.  Several hours later, I heard about Ted’s stroke and his Life-Flight to Philadelphia. Ted has now joined the great majority – of our deceased grandparents, military service members, and too many classmates in the final transition of precious life.  I cannot muster the soothing words to comfort Carol and her daughters about their horrendous loss.  I just pray that they take the time to bounce back and continue living their lives as Ted would have wanted.  That is the best tribute and honor that can be given to a Great friend and loving husband and father.

Our thoughts are with you and your family during this most difficult time.  We will always remember our discussions during trivia when it came to those thorny questions that no one could possibly answer. We always valued talking to both of you during those evenings when we shared our own personal challenges.  God bless you.                                           Sharon and Dave Duncan

Although I do not know Ted, my life was blessed when I met his precious daughter Laura. It’s only been a short time but feels like it’s always been. Her words of admiration and love for her dad is immeasurable. Her heart is broken and there will always be a missing piece. I pray that your tears will soon be tears of laughter and sweet memories. Love from Texas
