Dr. Milton Shenk Good, MD, 87

June 15, 2020

On June 15, 2020, Milton Shenk Good, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and life-long devoted family physician, passed away at the age of 87.

Dr. Good was born in Morgantown, Pennsylvania to Noah G. and Ella Shenk Good. On June 30th, 1956, Milton married his loving and supportive wife, Anna Mary Augsburger. A graduate of Franklin & Marshall College and Hahnemann Hospital, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Milton practiced medicine in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania for over 40 years. As a small town doctor, he maintained a family practice office, making many house calls and delivering numerous babies. During those years, he was on the staff of Lancaster General Hospital. Dr. Good’s artistic endeavors included photography and sculpture. He was passionate about traveling, skiing, and bicycling. He was known for his subtle humor, keen intellect, and devotion to God. For the past 18 years, he courageously worked through recovery from brain trauma with his devoted wife, Ann, by his side. He was encouraged by the words from Psalm 121 “I lift up my eyes to the hills– where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

Milton was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lois Anita Good Stockheim. He is survived by two siblings, Doris Allegra Bomberger of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Ruth Elaine Denlinger of Fulks Run, Virginia. Milton and Anna Mary raised four children: Sonia Jeanne (married to Robert Lynn Horst) of Harrisonburg, VA, Erika Joan (married to Jeffrey Mark Norton) of Mt.Gretna, PA, Don Milton Good (married to Suzanne Louise Hinish) of Elizabethtown, PA, and Judith Annette Good of Elizabethtown, PA. Milton delighted in his eight grandchildren: Nichole Marie Keiter, Danielle Lynn Aiello, Brittany Anne Norton, Michael Lynn Horst, Jonathan Mark Norton, Evan William Good, Daniel Aaron Horst, and Laura Elyse Good. He was blessed with twelve great-grandchildren.

Dear Joan,
I have wonderful childhood memories of our time spent together in your lovely home above your father’s office. Your parents were always extremely kind and welcoming, soft spoken, sincerely gracious and loving. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Dr. Good was a good man.  A “dear and glorius physician” to many.  He was gentle, kind, full of compassion and sensitive to the needs of others.  He kept us healthy through the years when we were raising a large family and we enjoyed visiting with him and Ann long after the children were grown.  We taught a Sunday School class together and had many feelings in common.  We thank God for his life.  We mourn his passing.  He will be greatly missed by many.

Joyce and I remember great visits in your home. You were gracious hosts. We had meaningful visits in the hospital. And singing Christmas carols with Rotary and church folks in your home. Milton was remembered at a recent Elizabethtown Rotary meeting where he was a faithful member for many years. Milton lived a spirited and purposeful life. God’s peace to all.

I recall being ill and bed ridden and he came to our home on East Hummelstown Street. Who ever heard of a doctor making house calls in the 60’s? I did! What a committed man! My family all loved and respected Dr. Good. May God bless him and his family.

My condolences to the Good family. Dr Good has helped my parents of 4 with illnesses, stitches to wellness checks. I remember running from him when it was time for vaccines. There was no other Doc like him and his loving staff.

We were sorry to learn of the death of Dr. Good.  Our family (my parents Helen and Jim Hindma and we—Jim, Linda, Melissa, Amy, and Elizabeth) appreciated and benefitted from his thorough, compassionate care for many years.  We always enjoyed our trips to the doctor (!) for we had complete confidence in Dr. Good’s care.  We relished our conversations and appreciated seeing some his artistic creations in the examining rooms.  We express our deepest sympathy to his family.  Linda (Hindman) and Jim Campbell and family.

I, as Secretary of the Lancaster Mennonite School Class of 1950, send my condolences in the passing of Milton, our Vice President. I remember him as one of the tallest; a serious student with a ready smile and chuckle and  the shortest route home after school.

This breaks my heart. I knew him my whole life and worked for him for more than 20 years.   Such a fine man and family. I’m privileged to own one of his sculptures which he gave to me when I celebrated my 10th anniversary of working for him, and I was pregnant. I would not have the healthcare career I have now without all the invaluable experiences I had in his practice. I loved working for him, and I loved the work and our patients. He is in my heart and part of who I am as a medical professional. He had a great life with all his family. He leaves his mark with many of us. God bless him. God bless all his family. I love you all.

I was just recently thinking about Dr. Good, our family physician for many years.  He was one of the best doctors I’ve been to.  He was compassionate and caring.  He always took time to listen and was a good diagnostician, rare these days.  I am so sorry to read of his death and want to extend my sympathy to his family.
