Dr. John H. “Jack” Hanley, 80

September 25, 2014

Jack lived for 80 years before answering God’s call. Jack was the son of the late Sarah Jane Warfel and stepson of the late Chester Warfel.

He was married to his high school sweetheart, Mary Anne (Nicklaus) Hanley, on June 11, 1955. They are the parents of Lynn Palmer, wife of Mark Palmer, of Pittsburgh; Leslie Staskel, wife of Thomas Staskel, of Lancaster; Mary Anne Weber, wife of Thomas Weber, of Millersville; and Matthew Hanley of Lancaster.

The Hanleys have eight grandchildren: Ryan Staskel and Kelly Staskel, both of Chicago; Alexandra Palmer of Irwin; Kevin Staskel of Philadelphia; Andrea Frescura, wife of Michael Frescura, of Boquet; Hope Weber, Michael Weber and Carolyn Weber, all of Millersville.

He and his family have been charter members of St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church, Rohrerstown, PA. Jack was the president of the first school board of St. Leo’s School and coached baseball there for 10 years.

Second only to his love of family was Jack’s love of baseball, especially the Phillies. He played baseball as a catcher for St. Joseph’s Midgets, Elks Junior Legion team, Franklin and Marshall College, and the Manheim Bulldogs. As a 50th birthday gift, he was treated to the Phillies Dream Week. He had the privilege of warming up Hall of Famers Jim Bunning, Jim Kaat, Chris Short, Art Mahaffey, and Robin Roberts. Jack played as a catcher for the Phillies Dream Team from 1985-1995 in Philly.

As a young man, Jack held many jobs including selling soft pretzels on Cabbage Hill, setting pins at St. Joseph’s Club, delivering Lancaster newspapers, working as a “soda jerk” at the Candy Corner, and selling Christmas novelties for Hoeltzel’s. He was also employed by the Ark Machine Shop and the Lancaster Recreation Commission as well as by the Public Service of New Jersey as a bus driver from 1956-58.

Jack attended St. Joseph’s School, Lancaster Catholic High School, Franklin and Marshall College, and Temple University School of Dentistry, graduating with his DDS in 1959.

Jack served in the U. S. Navy from 1959-1962. Jack interned at Portsmouth, VA U. S. Naval Hospital. He then did independent duty aboard the USS Shangri-La, an aircraft carrier. While in the Navy, Jack reached the rank of Navy Lieutenant.

Jack began his private dental practice in October 1962. He retired in February 2001. Jack was a member of Conestoga Country Club from 1950-2001. He then joined the Parsormore Golf group from 2002-2013. He also was a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity at F & M, Psi Omega Dental Fraternity, the Kolmer Honorary Medical Society, and was a 3rd degree Knight of Columbus, Lancaster Council 867. He was secretary and president of Lancaster County Dental Society, and member of the Pennsylvania Dental Association and the American Dental Association.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Monday, September 29, 2014 at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Ave, Lancaster, PA 17601 with Rev. Peter I. Hahn as Celebrant. Condolences to the Family

October 17, 2014

Dear Mrs. Hanley and family,
Although belated, we want to take this opportunity to send our condolences to  you and your family on the death of Dr. Hanley.  He was my husband John and my dentist for many, many years and it was always a pleasure to see him, both in the office and elsewhere when we’d bump into him.  Such a gentleman he will be long remembered for his humor and always being interested in what was going on in our family. Please know how much we appreciated him, both as a dentist and a friend and you and your family have our thoughts and prayers during this time of sorow. May God reward him with peace and eternal life.
Most sincerely,
Nancy and John Straw

To the Hanley family,
It was with sorrow that we learned of your husband & father’s death.  I(Nancy) first met Dr. Hanley when I worked as a nurse’s aide at LGH & he began working in the dental clinic & I assisted him.  I went on to nursing school from there, married & moved to Willow Street.  It was then that we decided to him take care of our family’s dental needs becuase I was impressed with his gentle manner & careful work.  Our children were never fearful about going to the dentist.  When we needed to find other care after Dr. Hanley’s retirement, we often got remakrs about the good work that had been done on our teeth.
May God give you peace as you grieve your loss & find comfort in the many good memories you have.
    Nancy & Paul Hess

To Mary Ann and family, Sincerely sending my sympathy to all of you. Jack was part of my family because his Aunt Kitty was also my Aunt Kitty. We had short visits over the years when he came to the Phillie’s Spring Training games in Clearwater, FL. I have missed him when he no longer was able to be there. I am sure he will be watching how they do next year and I will be remembering him. Love, Mary Ann (Von Stetten) Carroll
