Dr. André N. Hanna, 70

Dr. André N. Hanna, 70, of Lancaster, PA went home to be with the Lord on October 17, 2008.

André was born to the late Naguib and Fadwa Hanna on June 27th 1938 in Aley, Lebanon. He was married to his beloved wife Mary Hanna for 42 years this past September.

Dr. Hanna practiced as a surgeon while living in the Middle East.  André and Mary came to America in January of 1970 to pursue a better life for their family.  The family moved to Danville, IL in 1974 where Dr. Hanna took the position of head of Anesthesia and Respiratory Care Departments.  He served the community in this capacity for nearly 25 years, committing to “always keep the patient first.”   Constantly seeking ways to further his excellence as a physician, Dr. Hanna was recognized as a Fellow of American College of Chest Physicians and a diplomate of the American College of Health Care Executives.  He also established a pain clinic, belonged to numerous medical societies, served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Illinois School of Medicine, as well as participated in several civil and community activities.   Dr. Hanna retired after a busy and successful career to spend more time with his family and “pursue a nobler cause.”   His heart’s desire was to pass on the many blessings he had received from the Lord.  In the past several years he served as the president of Believers Bookshelf, USA, a charitable Christian literature publishing entity.

André and Mary moved to Lancaster, PA in July 2008 to be closer to their children.

André was preceded in death by his parents Naguib and Fadwa Hanna.  He is survived by his dearly loved wife, Mary Hanna, son, Philip Hanna, husband of Virginia Hanna, daughter, Christine Hanna, granddaughter Bethany Hanna, two sisters Marguerite (late Maurice Bassali) and Evette (Youssef Riad), one brother, Samuel Hanna, an uncle, numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to Fund for Christian Service 8831 Baywood Dr., Huntington Beach, CA 92646.

Dear friends, I was shocked to hear this news and suddenly thought of all the kindness shown to me by Dr. Hanna and your family. I miss you all and my heart goes out to you, as well as my mom and dad and Jay. Dr. Hanna was a fantastic testimony for the Lord and will be greatly missed. I know he is with the Lord, and though we miss him, I can only imagine the splendor and fellowship he is enjoying with his Saviour. I send out hugs to you all. Our prayers are with you.
In Christ,

I am so sorry for your loss. I was a R.N. and worked with Dr. Hanna in different aspects over the years. He was always a gentleman and a sweet spirit. He treated EVERYONE with respect regardless of education or anything else for that matter. This was a man who cared about his fellow human beings and showed it in a wonderful way. This will be a great loss for our world, but many rewards for him in heaven.
Sincerely,
Susan Molloy Owens

Dearest Mary, Christine,and Philip,
David and I learned of Dr. Hanna’s passing from our daughter, Betsy, who now is in residency in Iowa (Comm.News online). We are sad that we were not able to have a last conversation with him, but rejoice in the fact that he now will be able to be with Christ and ask all the questions that we all have wondered about for years!!  Dr. Hanna not only professed his faith, but he lived his faith each moment of each day. He truly contributed so much in such a short amount of time. May God give you strength and the peace that passes all understanding in the following days. And know that we still love your family and look forward to seeing Dr. Hanna someday—and what a great day that we be for all of us!  Thinking of you with loving thoughts, David & Kathy McGee

Christine and family,
We here at Lancaster General Pediatrics are deeply sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. We hope you find strength and comfort in the arms of our loving Lord and Savior.

Dr. Christine Hanna,
We were so sorry to hear about your dad.  You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Mary and family,  Our prayers are with you, Philip and his family and Christine.  May God’s grace cover you at this time. Love, Doug and Brenda Boggess and Kevin and Debi Kagels, your Westville-Danville friends.

I am saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Hanna.  Having worked with Dr. Hanna left a lasting impression to this day in my practice of anesthesia.  He treated me like a son in many respects and I always felt he held me in high esteem.  Those years were very difficult for me and my family but knowing I worked with a christian meant all the difference in the world.  I’m grateful for all he passed on to me and will remember him fondly.  Dave Tabels and Family

I share your grief as you mourn the loss of your husband and father.  I remember you from Danville, IL where Christine was in a kindergarten class that I taught and Philip was in the school, too. I believe Christine may have been in the same class as my daughter, Stacey Wilkinson.
How wonderful that Dr. Hanna was able to pursue that "nobler cause," even if for less time than he would have desired.  The obituary led me to believe that his life counted for Christ and that now he is rejoicing in heaven with our Father.  I trust He will give you comfort and peace in the days to come.
In Christ,
Marsha Wilkinson

My name is Darling Oakes, or as Dr. Hanna dubbed me "Dee".  I began working for Dr. Hanna in 1988 as his Dept of Anesthesia Secretary..  His children were young and Dr. Hanna worked hard long hours.  He always made time to stop and love his children when they came in with Mrs. Hanna.  Dr. Hanna was a very strong willed take charge person.  Though I may not have agreed with some of his ways he always worked hard to achieve his goals, Mrs. Hanna was often busy by his side helping him.  I learned many, many lessons from him.  Since my retirement from the hospital I would occasionally run into Dr. Hanna and he always, always warmly greeted me and  inquired about my family.  I have to admit, I was hoping to run into him to again to proudly show off my grandson’s photo, as he was very proud of his children and family….. His children grew up so fast, marrying, starting a family, I would have liked to had the chance to catch up.
Please accept my sincere condolences.  You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I was the VP of Development for Provena USMC for 15 years. During my entire time at the hospital, Dr. Hanna was always a true gentleman, generous with his time and funds. We always had such good conversations on health care and the need for Christ in our lives. He cared deeply for the patients he served and the staff who worked beside him. He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. My prayers are with his family and friends.

Dave Tables called this morning about our loss of Andre’.  He will be so missed.  We know, though, that he is with our Lord and Jesus, and that all stress and troubles are now gone.  We wish we had all gotten together before you moved.  We do miss you.  We grief over our loss of a good friend but rejoice that he is at home with the Lord.   We love you all and offer our condolences with you.   Love, Jan and Gene Gray

My name is Fran Reese, R.N.  I worked at the Danville facility for many years, retiring in 2006 from the Cancer Center.  I was always aware of the kind spirit of Dr. Hanna and his deep faith in Christ.  I am a fellow believer, and it is difficult, even working for a Catholic institution, to speak up amidst many non-believers, or people who think they are and aren’t.  I have the deepest respect for Dr. Hanna.  We used to attend the Friday once a month Cancer Care meetings (Tumor Board).  Also, the lady who helped the Hanna’s pack their belongings to move is my mother’s caregiver, Brenda Boggess.  Please accept my sincere condolences, and know that the angels are showing him the way to the feet of Jesus.  Fran Reese, R.N.  Danville, Illinois

Dear Mary:
Susie and I were very saddened to read in the newspaper that Andre had died.  I have many very fond memories the 25 years we worked together.  I always knew that my patients were going to get the best care when he was involved in their treatment.  Andre was a very dedicated and brilliant physician as well a wonderful man. He is will deeply missed. Please give Phillip and Christine our felt heart loss of their father.  We will miss him.  God Bless all of you.
Very kindest regards, Bob and Sue Ewbank
