Doris M. Kilts, 86

February 23, 2013

Doris M. Kilts, 86, beloved mother and grandmother, was peacefully carried home by angels on Saturday, February 23, 2013, after a lengthy illness. Doris, born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Samuel K. Shotzberger and Dorothy Wenger Shotzberger, was preceded in death by her husband, Richard W. Kilts, who passed away in 2007. They were married 59 years. Doris resided at the Mennonite Home, where she will be remembered fondly by her caregivers for her bright smile.

Doris graduated from Manheim Township High School in 1945. She worked as a secretary for 5 years at the Lancaster Stockyards, and then at the Lancaster Children and Youth Agency for 9 years. After that, Doris and her sister Evelyn opened Dori Mae’s Dress Shop in Lititz, which they owned for over 10 years. Doris also volunteered as a “Gray Lady” at Lancaster General Hospital, and was always quick to help others when needed. In her spare time Doris enjoyed knitting, playing cards, reading, gardening, cooking, and spending time with family. Doris, Richard, and family loved to spend summers at Leisure Point at Rehoboth Beach.

She was a member of Calvary Church in Lancaster.

Doris is survived by her three children: Beverly Maxwell of Elizabethtown, Pa; Rick Kilts, married to Suzanne, of Drums, PA; and Samuel Kilts, married to Cynthia, of Elizabethtown, PA. Doris, known as “Nanny,” will also be missed by grandchildren Bethena Haser (John), Deborah Long (James), Jeanelle VanBlargen (Chris), Patrick Kilts (engaged to Heather O’Nore), Jessica Wisniewski (Jim), and Melissa Hershey (Mark), and great grandchildren Hanna, Evan, David, Colin, Paige, Morgan, and Owen. She was preceded in death by her three sisters:  Mary Jane Musser, Evelyn Slack, and Janet McGarr.

A private service is being held on Monday, March 4, 2013, at 11:30 at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, PA with Chaplain Mim Cruz officiating. Please omit flowers. Contributions may be made to Missions Fund at Calvary Church of Lancaster, Hospice & Community Care of Lancaster, the Mennonite Home, or the Alzheimer’s Association. Dear Bev, Rick, Sam, and Family:

Aunt Doris was a wonderful person who was always full of life and lots of fun to be around.  I have many happy memories of her while we lived next to each other on Delp Road, dinners at grandpa Shotzberger’s home, and picnics and volleyball games at the farm in Lawn.  We always had a great time if we got to be the ones to ride home with her after being at the farm in Lawn.  We’d start down the hill around Governor Dick and she’d just put the car in neutral and let it roll. We’d laugh and laugh.  I’m so glad that I got to visit her in December before she passed away.  I’m sure she didn’t know we were there but it was good for us to be with her for a short time and remember.  We’ll keep you in all our prayers.

Love, Connie

My family sends their deepest sympathies to the entire Kilts family for your loss. I did not know Doris nor did I ever meet her, but got to know Rich, Jeanelle, and Patrick through work. I truly believe that the character of a family is reflected through its generations, and I have much respect for the 3 members I am lucky to know and became friends with, so that very simply tells me that Doris was a wonderful person who will be greatly missed by many.
My wife Barbara, my daughter Lauren, and I are very sorry for your loss. You will be in our thoughts and our prayers. God bless.

To Bethena Haser and Family:

So very sorry to learn of your great loss. She was a woman who gave much to others in so many ways. I know you will miss her so much. Thinking of you all and keeping you all close in prayer.

In sympathy and friendship,
Eileen Raffensberger

Dear Bev, Rick and Sam,

My brother Don told me today that a friend of his in Lancaster called him to say Doris had passed away.  She sure was a fun loving gal….I remember when we lived on Delp Road and she would come visit my Mom …Dottie many evenings.  Mom told me how she and Dick use to babysit for me when I was very young.  In fact somewhere I have a picture of her holding me.
She came to Florida once I think after before or after Uncle Sam passed away and stayed at my home with us.  I can still see her with her sparkle in her eyes. Reading about her confirms that I always thought she was a loving, kind person.

Remember all the good times!!!
Judy (Shotzberger) Schneegold
