Donna J. Sturgis, 72
September 6, 1947 - March 24, 2020
Donna J. Sturgis, 72, of Wrightsville, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Betty Jane (Beichtel) Sturgis.
Donna graduated from Penn Manor High School with the Class of 1965 and later received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Wagner College in Staten Island, NY. Though the years, she worked as a Registered Nurse at various health care facilities. In her youth, Donna was a past Honors Queen of Job’s Daughters Bethel 8, Millersville, and she formerly volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader. Donna became an avid book reader and enjoyed doing word search puzzles. She faithfully watched Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy every night and did not appreciate being disturbed during that hour. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church in Lancaster where she served as a Board Member and participated in many social activities. She also attended Hempfield United Methodist Church where she was active with the Woman’s Bible Group.
Donna will be sadly missed by her cousin Frances Sangrey and her husband Keith of Wrightsville, with whom she resided, and her “adopted sister” Linda Shissler and her husband David of York. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by an infant brother.
Donna will be laid to rest privately at Conestoga Memorial Park. Due to current health concerns and restrictions, a public Celebration of Life will be planned and announced for a future date. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Trinity EC Church, 323 Hershey Avenue, Lancaster, PA, 17603, or to VisionCorps, 244 N. Queen Street, Lancaster, PA 17603.

This is long overdue. Donna Jean was a kind and compassionate person. I didn’t know her very well, but our mothers and fathers all worked together. The moms worked at RCA and the dads worked at the Lancaster Armstrong flooring plant. When Donna’s mom had her stroke my mom was there with friendly visits and encouragement all the time. They stayed close through Betty’s long physical decline. My mom and Betty truly loved one another. Charles and Betty were frequent guests to our house and the many hours of laughter brightened Betty each time. Once after Charles had filled her plate Betty spooned a large scoop of mashed potatoes into her mouth, instantly my dad said something stupid and Betty did a spit take and potatoes flew all over my dad.
I lost my mom in December of 2020, she was the last of the foursome to pass, if there is a heaven, I’ve already seen it in my childhood dining room. These 4 people were so warm and kind to each other. My mom knew about Donna Jean and her nursing skills too. One time while visiting the Sturgis house in Millersville I got my first bee sting. Donna Jean happened to be home fom NY and she was my immediate Primary Care Person. She expertly calmed me down and took the worst of the sting away. I don’t remember but I likely thought she was an angel. Today she sings with the angels. I hope she sees my mom, dad and her parents too. Rest In Peace Donna Jean

I met Donna at Wagner and shared many trips to and from our homes in PA. She was a year behind me at Wagner. We also were involved in Delta Zeta Sorority. I lost track of her after Iwent to Liberia for 2 yrs. I have thought of her for many years and wondered about her nursing career. Donna may you Rest In Peace and one day we will reconnect. (I just saw the obit in the Wagner newsletter)

Donna was a phenomenal role model for me when i was a new nurse 40 years ago in Loeb Center, Montifiore Hospital
She was also my friend. I remember her sense of humor and compassion for all. As an animal lover, she watched my dog ao i could vacation. I will never forget upon my return, she told me she had a good talk with “Annie” my dog. We laughed so much. I am sorry that I lost touch with her. You will always be in my memory and be missed.

Donna was a wonderful nurse who taught me a lot when I was a new nurse over 40 years ago in the Bronx. She was smart and funny and endlessly kind to her patients and her colleagues. Donna was also very generous to me, and a good friend. We lost contact probably 30 years ago, but I’ve never forgotten her. I wish I could have told her that in person.
May Donna’s family and friends be comforted by their memories of Donna, and by the knowledge that Donna’s impact lives on.
Sincerely, Lenore Los Kamp

Fran – I’m so very sorry to hear of the loss of Donna, your dear cousin, but really more a sister and very best friend to you. I am glad I got to meet her on several occasions as her PA and to know why you loved her. You truly gave her a good life and helped her be ready for real life now in her eternal home. Just think of the Jeopardy questions she is enjoying there with the Creator of all! My prayers are with you as you grieve and miss her so much.

Very shocked to see this. Thank you for the information in the obituary. I met Donna through breakfast meals through work. Very pleasant woman who seemed to enjoy life and those around her. I will miss her friendliness and smile.

Donna will be missed dearly by one of her NY sisters Felicia Lecce. Donna came into my life in September of 1969, after her Graduation from Wagner with her BSN. She was my Junior Girl Scout Leader, & moved up to be my Senior Leader – she had established a connection with several of us and wanted to continue to help us learn to navigate life. Donna, I & and Cheryl Halvorsen-Gatterdum became very close friends & we were able to become a part of Donna’s family (immediate and extended) and loved her mom & dad, whom we called Grandma & Grandpa. We were family for over 50 years…. Donna, you are loved, you will always be in our hearts. You were taken too soon…. but God had a plan. Until we see you again, please watch over all of us! Be kind to my Dad…
