Dolores Barto Stehman, 94

Dolores Barto Stehman, 94, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2021, with her daughters by her side. She was born in Lancaster to the late Edward J. and Beatrice (Gunzenhauser) Barto. Dolores’s husband, John N. Stehman, died in 2002.
A graduate of J. P. McCaskey High School, she worked as assistant to the ED of Lancaster County Tax Collection Bureau. Dolores completed a course in Philadelphia to become one of the first keypunch operators and was a member of the former Business Women’s Association.
Dolores loved music and played the piano and clarinet. She also learned to play the organ in her 80’s and attempted to keep current with technology.
Along with her husband John, she was also a member of the Lancaster Bicycle Club and the Swing Thru Square Dance Club of Lancaster earning a Blue Ribbon at the Farm Show.
She was a faithful worshipper at Trinity UCC in East Petersburg and was previously a member of the former St. Andrews UCC.
Dolores’s family was her biggest love, and she really enjoyed keeping up with her grandkids. Surviving Dolores are her two daughters, Dolohn “Lonnie”, wife of Robert Keeler of Flovilla, GA, and Marta Jo, wife of Russel Cochran of Lancaster, as well as seven grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, one niece and one nephew.
In addition to her parents and husband, Dolores was preceded in death by her infant daughter Pamela Dolores Stehman, and her siblings, Edward D. Barto and Gladys M. Hertzler.

My sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Stehman family. I had the honor and pleasure to care for Dolores as her Ophthalmologist for many years. She was always smiling and had a positive attitude at every visit and I looked forward to seeing her. We became friends. She was one classy lady! She will be missed by many. May her memory be eternal.

Tom and I have fond memories of both John and Dolores in our years with the Lancaster Bicycle Club. Lots of fun going to Cape May! Dolores was very kind and caring, always with a friendly smile. Our sympathy to your family, as we know she will be very missed. Sincerely, Tom and Kathy Heckles

Dolores is one of the best memories of St. Andrew. She was always there when called upon. I’m sorry we lost touch in the last several years but that doesn’t mean she was lost in my prayers. My sympathy to the family. I know you will miss her.

Dolores Stehman, friend to all the people who knew her, was caring, had a good sense of humor, and was a fine example of a good citizen in her community. ORCA, Organization for Responsible Care of Animals, was fortunate to know Dolores as a loving friend to the animals, as well. Though her years of support to ORCA many, many animals were given second chances in life. She will be sorely missed, Connie Kondravy, Co-founder of ORCA.

I was surprised and saddened to read of Dolores’ passing. I had known her and John for over 45 years through the bike club, from even before I moved back to this area in 1990. We were neighbors from the time she moved into Marta and Russell’s home. I live in the 600-block of Candlewyck and would occasionally see Dolores while biking in the neighborhood. John and I had both been president of the bike club, he in its early days and I in the early 90s. She was one of the last of the bike club’s original members. I will miss her.
