Dennis J Shelley, 85

April 09, 2014

Dennis J Shelley, 85, of Rohrerstown passed away suddenly Wednesday, April 9, 2014. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Jacob Shelley and Grace Haar. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith.

After graduating J.P. McCaskey high school in 1945 and after being deemed ineligible to join the military, he was drafted in 1950 and served two years in the US Army reaching the rank of Corporal. Denny also worked for the Hamilton Watch Company and after another 28 years as a mailman for the US Postal Service, he retired, often speaking fondly of the last ten years delivering mail at Park City Center.

Dennis was a proud member of the Travelers Protective Association for the past 44 years.

An avid bowler in his younger years, Dad also enjoyed collecting stamps and coins with his son Dave with whom he shared a love of baseball. He was even lucky enough to pursue that passion as a member of the coaching staff for Hippies Raiders, a semi-pro team here in Lancaster.

Dad spent the past 26 years sharing his life with his daughter Kathleen in her home in Rohrerstown. He was a regular fixture at Louis restaurant and was always willing to share his winnings from a scratch-off lottery ticket.

Dennis is survived by his son David M Shelley, husband of Melissa of Rockvale, TN, his daughter Kathleen L Mallinson of Rohrerstown and his sister Barbara A Stevens of Lancaster. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Timothy, Daniel, Ryan, Nichole and Christopher. He was preceded in death by his daughter Denise E Reikard, sister Kathleen R Shelley and brother Charles Shelley.

A Memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Charles F. Snyder, Jr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz with Timothy D. Mallinson officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow in Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Lancaster.
Kindly omit flowers. Memorial contributions in Dennis’ memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to American Heart Association, 610 Community Way, Lancaster, PA 17603.

Dear Dave & Family…
We are very sad to learn of Dennis’s death. Don worked at the Post Office with him for many, many years, and he will be sadly missed by Don and a lot of his friends. Due to both of us not being able to get around right now, we are sadly unable to attend the service. Please know that we send our most heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. Our prayers are with you.
Sincerely,
Donald & Judi Eitnier
