Demetrios J. Madonis, 92

Demetrios J. Madonis, 92, of Lancaster, PA passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at Hospice of Lancaster County Essa Flory Center. He was born in Asfendiou, Kos, Greece to the late John and Maria (Papadimitriou) Madonis.

Demetrios was the husband of the late Stamatia D. (Hazangeles) Madonis who passed away in October of 2009.

Demetrios was a barber in Kos, Greece for twenty-four years before moving to the United States. His first employment here in Lancaster was with RCA for five years, C & D Battery Company of Leola for eight years, and after retirement he enjoyed helping his sons at the House of Pizza for many years.

Demetrios was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and Pan-Coan Society.

To his family and friends, Demetrios was known as “PaPa.” He was also known as a stoic man, a man who put his needs aside when taking care of his wife for many years when she became sick. He made the impossible happen through his caring and giving personality.

Demetrios enjoyed cooking, gardening, growing vegetables, and socializing around town. He was friends with many of the local farmers and was known to bring pizzas to them when picking vegetables from their farms.

He is survived by his four children, Andriana D. Pikoulas, wife of Efthymios, of Athens, Greece, John D. Madonis, husband of Sophia, of Lancaster, PA, Michael D. Madonis, husband of Maria, of Toronto, Canada, Christos D. Madonis, husband of Eleni, of Lancaster, eleven grandchildren, two brothers, Theophilos Madonis, husband of Anezoula and Angelos Madonis, husband of Anthoula, both of Sydney, Australia. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Vasilios, Konstantinos, Demosthenes, and Elias Madonis, and one sister, Stergoula Papapostolou.

The Madonis family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to Dr. Spencer Phillips, staff and caregivers at the Mennonite Home (Lititz Run), Hospice of Lancaster County, and the Office of Aging.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church 64 Hershey Ave. Lancaster, PA 17603 at 10:30am with Rev. Alexander Goussetis officiating. Viewings will be held at the church on Wednesday evening from 7-9pm with a Trisagion Service at 8pm and again on Thursday from 10-10:30. Interment will take place in Conestoga Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Demetrios’ memory to the Annuciation Greek Orthodox Church or to Hospice of Lancaster County 685 Good Dr. PO Box 4125 Lancaster, PA 17604.

We were very touched by the fine qualities of this gentleman. My wife and I are full-time volunteers along with 7&1/2 million others around the earth. We love helping people of all religions understand Bible truths.  Many associated with us are in Greece as well. It’s our privilege to send comfort to you at this difficult time.
One thing we have found is that without the Bible, there is no man on earth that can give your loved one back to you. All we have to go on with is our good memories. But the Bible goes beyond us humans in giving us an understanding of what death is and what the future is for our loved ones who have passed away.
This is why Job 14:14,15 says-"…if an able bodied man dies, can he live again? All the days of my compulsory service I shall wait. You will call and I shall answer. For the work of your hands you will have a yearning."
This scripture gives hope for the future because it tells us God yearns to bring our loved ones back to life again.
