David Seffers Lane, 88

David Seffers Lane, 88, Lancaster, PA, died on May 20, 2014. Born in Wilmington, DE, Mr. Lane was raised in Kingston, NY and attended Princeton University before graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1946. He went on to obtain his Electrical Engineering Masters degree from the University of Pennsylvania where he worked on one of the world’s first computers. Mr. Lane went on to serve in the U.S. Army at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland and the Army Missile Center in Huntsville, AL where he was the first Director of Training for the Ordnance Guided Missile School.
Mr. Lane lived in Massachusetts and Paris, France where he worked at Raytheon Corporation and then worked for Honeywell in Minnesota and Florida until his retirement in 1989. He won Honeywell’s highest Engineer-Scientist award for a helmet-sight system that was used for many years by military pilots.
Mr. Lane married the former Jean Ennis Farber from Sparrows Point, MD in 1951 and remained married to her until her death in 1997. They had four children””Sara Lane of Lewisburg, WV; David, Jr. of Lafayette, CA; Jennie Lane of Ankara, Turkey, and; Mary Roble of Clearwater, FL. In 2001, Mr. Lane married the former Barbara Higley Tall of Ambler, PA who survives him. Most recently, Mr. Lane made his home in the Willow Valley Communities in Lancaster. Besides his wife and his four children, nine grandsons, one granddaughter, and two great-grandsons survive Mr. Lane.
Interment of his cremated remains will be in Curlew Memorial Gardens in Oldsmar, FL, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
