David P. Schuyler, 70

July 24, 2020

David P Schuyler, of Newburgh and Lancaster, PA, died suddenly on July 24, 2020. He was 70 years old.

David had a wonderful forty-year career as a Professor of Humanities and American Studies at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster. He was a dedicated teacher and authored numerous books, including many that focused on the Hudson Valley, which he loved.

David lost his wife Marsha Sener Schuyler to cancer 18 years ago, and never stopped loving and missing her. Our sadness in losing our brother is softened in knowing that he is reunited in Heaven with Marsha as well as with our Mother, Ruth Calyer. He was also predeceased by his father, John Barry Schuyler and his stepfather, Gordon Cote.

He is survived by his daughter Nancy Sener Schuyler of Lancaster.

He is also survived by nine sisters and brothers, all of whom admired and loved him: Barry Schuyler and wife Jodi, Steve Schuyler and wife Toby, Ann Walsh and husband John, Paul Schuyler and wife Rachel, Mary Beth Higgins and husband Wilbur, Ruth James and husband Joe, Peter Schuyler and wife Beatriz, Brian Schuyler and wife Christine, and Drew Schuyler and wife Liliana. Other survivors include fifteen nieces and nephews, thirteen grand nieces and nephews and many cousins. David had many friends in Lancaster who he loved dearly.

David’s award-winning books included Embattled River: The Hudson and Modern American Environmentalism; Sanctified Landscape: Writers, Artists, and the Hudson River Valley, 1820-1909; A City Transformed: Redevelopment, Race and Suburbanization in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 1940-1980; Apostle of Taste: Andrew Jackson Downing 1815-1852, and several others. He also co-edited four volumes of the Frederick Law Olmstead Papers, and wrote more than thirty articles in professional journals.

He was very active in professional associations, and was a valued consultant in matters of historic preservation in Pennsylvania. These associations included Trustee of the New York Academy of History; chair of the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Board; and, the National Advisory Committee of Olana. At the time of his death he was a commissioner of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. And many more.

David earned his PhD from Columbia University where he began his long friendship and working relationship with Professor Ken Jackson. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from American University, and a Master’s Degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He was a devoted fan of the Tar Heels ever since, and almost never missed a basketball game.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Marsha and David Schuyler Scholarship Fund, Franklin and Marshall College, 637 College Avenue, Lancaster PA 17603, Attn College Advancement Office.

Condolences to the Family

David Schuyler was an exemplary professor and mentor. I had great admiration for him as a student at F&M in the late 1980s. He and Marsha had me and a group of former students over for brunch about five years after I graduated. He was always kind and generous with his time and knowledge. It was always in the back of my mind to reestablish contact. Alas, I did not. To his family and friends, please accept my condolences on your loss.

To Nancy and all the family: David’s sudden passing leaves a void for many of us. I met David early on his arrival to F&M. Then I was on staff in the Development Office. David supported our work by helping to reach out to the community. Years later, while I was a trustee, David and I maintained our friendship by dining at Jethro’s Restaurant,  or seeing him there with other friends. He was always engaging. Judy and I so appreciated receiving copies of his books. David encouraged his students to research and publish with him. What leadership! Judy and I miss him already. Paul and Judy Ware

Dear Nancy,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your father. There is some peace in knowing he is reunited with Marsha. I know how lonely this leaves you as I was an only child also. However, you have loads of extended family to share your memories.   Prayers and thoughts are with you.   KATHLEEN kUZMIAK

David and I started at F& M on or about the same time, he as professor, I as a late, 29year-old student, so we were newbies together and about the same age.  I remember him so well from my first year there, and I knew Marsha since I grew up in Lititz, and knew her brother.  I now live in Colorado, and just happened accross David’s obituary.  I am so sorry.  He was a great cohort years and years ago.

David was epitome of a teacher.  Brilliant, kind, and generous.  He had a great influence on me as a young planner in Lancaster.  I thought he was brilliant.  This is a great loss for Lancaster.  God’s speed David.  My condolences to the Schuyler family and all that loved him.

What a shock it was to see that announcement of David’s passing.  I knew Professor Schuyler for many years in my position as Director of Athletics at F&M.  He served on the Athletic Committee and was a supporter of all the intercollegiate teams, especially some of the women’s teams.  He was a frequent and visible presence at many home contests.  A friendly and personable colleague, he provided sage and timely advice when asked for.  The F&M community has lost one of it’s shining academic icons.  My sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to David’s family during this difficult time.  However, there will be a time soon to celebrate David’s life and positive impact on others.

David, David, I am so very sorry that you are gone.  I moved into the apartment above you and Marsha in 725 College Avenue when I came to F&M in 1984, but I have been looking up to you ever since.  You were a remarkable Professor, and for so many years part of the backbone of the College.  At so many levels, yours was indeed a life well lived – the ultimate achievement.  You will be so deeply missed. Well done and farewell, my friend.

I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to Nancy and the Schuyler family in the loss of David. While he was a famed academician, I knew him, Marsha and Nancy as special friends over the years. We shared some great dinners like blackened red fish at our home! David missed Marsha so very much and it’s a relief to know that they are finally together again. May they Rest In Peace.

I heard last night that Prof. Schuyler passed…. Makes me so sad. He was the reason and I decided to add a second major in college of American Studies. He was an amazing teacher, mentor and person all around. Everyone loved his classes and told you take his classes! His passion and enthusiasm for all that he taught was so evident. I took a number of classes with him, my favorite (and most vivid in my memory) was one on Urban Planning and the development of Lancaster. It included walking tours of the city in which I learned so much about how cities were designed, different communities and cultures. He would have the class to his house for dinner, and was always available to talk. He always remembered my name when I was on campus, and would ask about my sister too. I have been thinking about him all night… and the way he loved teaching and how he was always smiling. What a gift to have such am inspiring teacher in my life.  i am so sorry for your loss. May he rest in peace.

David’s death is certainly a loss to his many friends, his colleagues, his students, and the academic community. He and I were professors at Franklin & Marshall together, and he was one of the people who did not accuse me of going over to the dark side when I became an administrator! I admired his intellect, his tenacity and his kindness– all of which made him a wonderful scholar and writer, and such a good teacher! He was also a good friend as we worked together on projects for F&M’s faculty and administration. I wish David peace and all of his family and friends much love, along with my condolences and my gratitude for his life. Sam Houser

David will be missed. He was one of the warmest members of the F&M faculty, always ready with a “hello” and a smile. His compassion and care for students and the College was one of the things that we noticed right away when we met him, 30 years ago. He set a positive tone for collegial relations across the campus. Farewell David. Warmest regards, Carol and Andy de Wet

My condolences to Nancy, David’s sisters, brothers and the entire extended family.
David contributed greatly to the Lancaster community in his roles as Professor at F&M, his writings about Lancaster and his good citizenship. I met him during my 20 years of work as an employee of Lancaster. We had many conversations, particularly related to low and moderate income residents and initiatives undertaken (or missed) in serving the poor.
I witnessed a wonderful demeanor and kindness throughout my many conversations with him and, in particular, during the last 6 months.
You will be terribly saddened by his passing and I hope that you will be comforted by the love Lancastrians have for David and his remarkable life.

Rest in Peace, Dr Schuyler. I stayed with Marsha and him in their home at F & M when I went to attend my daughter’s graduation. They were both kindness itself. Dr Schuyler was one of my daughter’s professors and she kept in touch with him. My heartfelt condolences to Nancy and to the Schuyler family.

Together with me and several other friends and colleagues in Lancaster, Dave was also a graduate of the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture. Not surprisingly, he was one of the first to welcome me to Lancaster — and he was eager for me to appreciate its history as much as he did. It wasn’t a tough sell. On a personal note, he was that rare person who could hold his own in the most rigorous academic settings, and still be approachable and entertaining. He could size up your potential in an instant, and he held you to it! He expected a lot of his students and colleagues, but he knew they were up to the task. Whatever talents I think I have as a writer, I can’t hold a candle to Dave — an acknowledged master of all things written and spoken. Rest well, Dave. We’re better for having known you.

The news of David’s death was a shock and deeply saddening. He was a wonderful F&M colleague who was affectionately respected by his students, both present and former. His passing has left a large hole in the fabric of the College community. I send heartfelt condolences to his family and all who cared about him.

Dear Schuyler Family:     David Schuyler was that rare type of teacher that revelled in his students’ success even while demanding highest standards of conduct and scholarship.   I first came upon David over dinner at The New. York Historical Society, when I had the pleasure of dining with David’s cohort in History, Ken Jackson.  When Ken learned I was from Lancaster, he put me immediately in touch with David, which began a long-lasting friendship and journey through the finer marvels of history.    I had the great fortune of majoring in history and found through my years at Dartmouth two professors who reached David’s scholarship and commitment to the lives of students.  Professor Schuyler was just the sort of individual on whose shoulders have long rested the excellence which America’s schools of higher learning have long depended.  He was honest in history, avoiding cutting corners to read back into history that which did not exist.  His fame grew given his honest rendition of history that was not only explanatory but also was fun.  Students with whom David worked would have joined him, for instance in the midnight bike rides throughout Brooklyn (an area of which he had deep knowledge) ….

David always shared stories with us of growing up in Newburgh.  He was particularly proud of his birth city and of his many siblings.  At the same time, David became a real player in Lancaster and in F&M’s affairs, resulting in national recognition for his scholarship.
David suggested that his family wished for his return to Newburgh.  David suggested that his mother was most effective at this, by reminding him whenever asked where his home was to reply  “Home is where your mother lives.”   David, you get to return to “home” and Gina and I know that you will take the “historic paths ” which though may not deliver you as quickly, will surly be far more interesting and rewarding…
All best wishes, Thomas and Georgina Russo

Rest in peace, Dr. Schuyler. You and your work had a profound impact on my desire to pursue a career in urban planning and piqued my curiosities about the evolution of American cities, urban redevelopment, and historic preservation. Your course “The Urban Experience” at F&M was one of my favorites during my undergraduate career, and your extensive research and documentation of racial segregation and “Urban Renewal” in Lancaster City in the 20th century help us to better understand the foundations of our community today. Thank you again for your mentorship and the letter of recommendation for graduate school. I still have your books that you gave me.
