Daniel J. “Quigs” Quigley MSED, LAT, ATC, 58

May 06, 2020

Daniel J. Quigley, 58, of Lancaster, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 6, 2020.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of Marie H. McCausland Quigley of Ardmore, and the late Richard “Dick” J. Quigley.

Dan was a graduate of Lock Haven University and earned his Master of Science in Education from James Madison University. He began his 35-year career as a Certified Athletic Trainer at Harrisonburg High School in Virginia before coming to the Manheim Township School District in 1989.

Dan was a nationally recognized expert in athletic training, with a specialty in concussion protocol. In 2015, Dan was the recipient of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Athletic Trainer Service Award.

But even more than his technical expertise, what set “Quigs” apart was his devotion and care for the thousands of student athletes that he worked with throughout his career.

Dan had a life-long passion for all aspects of sports. He was a huge fan of Notre Dame, as well as all the Philadelphia sports teams.

He is survived by his children: Emma E. and Thomas W.; his mother Marie, his siblings Richard married to Hillary of New York City, Annemarie of Silver Spring, MD, Joseph married to Jennifer of Columbus, OH, and Michael married to Adrienne of Ashburn, VA and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a Memorial Mass celebrated at St John Neumann in Dan’s memory at a later time, for which an announcement will be published.

If you would like to make a contribution in Quigs’ memory, please give to The V Foundation at https://www.v.org.

As a township athlete who didn’t often need to go to him, I still remember him well and we loved Quigley. Sad to hear he passed early, he was one of a kind and on of many highlights from my high school years.

My sympathies to all of you with the passing of Quigs.  I knew Dan as a football official.  He always called me “old school” from a time he offered me a drink during a time out and I declined saying I was “old School”…meaning no drinks allowed till half time.  We laughed and continued our meetings whenever I had a Twp. game.  Later I learned that he was an LHU graduate like myself and I became “older school” to him since I graduated a few years before him.  It was always fun talking with him and as yoou know…he was a good man.
Good byes may be the rule here on Earth, but reunions are the law in Heaven.  So instead of saying goodbye…just say “see you later”.  Peace and God’s Blessings be with all of you.

I am saddened with the news of Dan’s passing. I was a player at JMU in the mid 80s. Quigs was a person who not only gave excellent care but truly cared for everyone he touched. My prayers are with the family during this time. He leaves a wonderful legacy and will be truly missed. God bless.

So sad to hear this news.  I was one of the many athletes that Dan “Quigs” took care of over his storied career.  As a JMU baseball player, Quigs was welcomed as an immediate part of the team upon his arrival.  I was lucky thru the years to see him annually at a trainers conference and was always welcomed with his huge smile, welcoming hug and of course the many locker room/roadtrip stories we shared.  Thoughts with his family and all those he touched thru his years of taking care of others!

So sorry for the loss of a good friend.  Dan was part of the THJHS staff and HHS athletic trainer.   He was a asset to our school system.   Dan brought out the good in all.  His humor, kindness, caring was just a few of his strengths.  Thoughts are with the family.  What a wonderful man.

We are so sad to hear of Dan’s passing.   Dan always took great care of me as the team trainer when we were together at Chantilly High School. We were in the same class of 79. Dan was a big part of our football team and a special friend.  My wife Lisa was also a close friend of Dan too since  we were all together at Chantilly.   We were glad to see him at our 40th reunion last Fall. Dan was a good friend and our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We will never forget the good times together during our high school days.  Dan will always be a Charger.  Lov ya Quigs!

We are still heartbroken after hearing about Quigs passing. He was wonderful to work with and he cared so much for our boys!  He would seek us out when there were injuries to discuss and always wanted the best for them. Their pain was his pain. On the other side, he was a true fan. He really enjoyed seeing them do well!  What a guy!  Will be missed dearly.

My condolences on passing of Quigs.   It’s been decades now since graduating from MTHS in ’92, and I still remember what a great spirit he was, and the absolute joy, dedication, and enthusiam he brought to his job and students on a day to day basis.
His family should be proud…there are generations of students that he has supported and impacted in such a positive way over the years.
Rest in Peace.

To say this news has devasted me would be an understatement.  Quigs took great care of me, both physcially and mentally, 3 seasons/sports a year, every year of my high school athletic career.  Without a doubt, he was the most impactful educator in my 4 years at Township.  He will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have their pathes cross with his.  Grateful to have so many good memories.

My wife, Nenie and I send our deepest condolences to the extended Quigley family. We were so saddened to learn of Quigs’ sudden passing. He and I have been close friends for over 30 years. We shared so many good times and laughs that I’ll never be able to recall them all. Quigs was outgoing, warm and caring as his legions of friends can attest. And nobody was better with a perfectly timed wisecrack to bring a smile to your face.He loved being an athletic trainer and treated it as his calling. The positive influence he had on young student athletes and his colleagues is incalculable. We hope his loved ones can find comfort knowing Quigs was loved by so many and that he left an indelible mark in this world. You all will be in our family’s thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Tom BakerHarrisonburg VA

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Quigs, as I considered him a mentor and friend. He introduced me to the field of athletic training when I was in high school, and was a mentor to me as I pursued that career.  While working as an athletic trainer, he was often the first person I would reach out to when I had a professional question.  And when I had the chance to see him at high school sporting events, he greeted me with a hug each time. He absolutely had an impact on my life, as well as the lives of countless others.  He will be sorely missed.

Quigs was a good friend and an outstanding colleague.  He will be missed.  He was a friend to all and always cared more for others than himself.  His life was cut short but was WELL lived! He left a legacy at MT and he will be missed.  Gone too soon.

So sorry to hear of Quigs passing. He was a great asset to the Manheim Township staff. Township athletes were in good hands with Qiugs. He helped them in more ways than just athletic training. Coaches that can remember pre 1989 understand what a great impact Dan had on the entire athletic program. His hiring allowed us to coach without the extra burden of our own poor attempts at athletic training (I never could tape an ankle correctly). I felt very confident about the medical decisions that he suggested during my years as soccer coach. There was always a secure feeling during games & practice sessions knowing Quigs was on site or just a quick call away when help was needed. I’ll miss his quick wit and sharing ideas with a fellow Lock Haven grad and devoted Phillies fan. He will be missed by many. Ed Journey

What a sad and shocking moment to hear of Quig’s passing.  He revolutionized how student athletes were cared for and properly prepared for thier sport.  He was always smiling and had a quick story to lighten the day.  May his family find comfort in all of his accomplishments.

Quigs was a genuine man; he cared about his patients and profession with true altruism. He will be missed greatly but his memory will live on forever. I can still see him dancing with that big smile on his face when we celebrated AT licensure in PA at the PATS extravaganza!

I was deeply saddened by the news of Quigs’ passing. He was truly a scholar and a gentleman, who was an integral part of Manheim Township’s academics and athletics. He touched the lives of thousands, including those of visiting student athletes. His presence brought peace. I’m grateful for his contributions to my decades of Blue Streak coaching experiences (cross country and track).

Quigs came to MTHS about the time my oldest entered high school. Through the years he provided great care as an expert trainer and friendship to all four of my children. Even though all graduated years ago and all have children of their own, they kept in touch and ran into him often. He was a kind man and will be sorely missed. He was at every sporting event I attended and always had a smile. My condolences to his entire family.

So devastating to hear of Quigs’ passing. He was my trainer 1996-2000, and took the best care of me after suffering from knee injuries, and needing three surgeries. He was the most encouraging person I came across as a student, and he will be missed. Prayers for family and friends as they grieve this incredible man.

Please accept my sincerest condolences on Dan’s passing. As the former high school band director at MTHS, I had a wonderful, genuine, and longtime friendship with Quigs. He was the consummate professional, and very dedicated to the well-being of all students participating in co-curricular activities at Manheim Township. We’ve lost a bright, caring, and shining light with Quigs’ passing; but please know that he left an indelible mark and memory on all those he served and worked with. Sincerely, Ken Husler

So sorry to hear of Dan’s passing. My fondest memory was during one of the get togethers at Uncle Jack’s 25th Anniversary in Lenexa, he was telling me these made up stories and I remember being mesmerized listening to him, for all of my 11 years. Condolences to Aunt Marie and his wife and children. I’m sure he’s resting in peace with Uncle Dick by his side.

So very sorry to hear the news about Quig’s passing. I worked with him at MTSD for many news and always admired his commitment to the students and his profession.
