Daniel J. Burke, 66

May 17, 2019

Daniel J. “Dan” Burke 66, of Strasburg PA , passed away peacefully at his home with his loving wife by his side on May 17, 2019. Born in Queens NY, he was the son of the late James and Loretta (Smith) Burke and the beloved husband of Caryn Husowech.

A member of the United States Postal Service for over 30 years, Dan loved his job as a mailhandler., and enjoyed the many friends he made among his co-workers and customers. Through his work gathering mail from the outside collection boxes at Lancaster’s main post office on Harrisburg Pike, he had the opportunity to meet and help many people in the community. He became such a familiar face that his wife was often surprised when they attended the summer concert series at Long’s Park, at how many people would stop and say hello. She nicknamed him the “mini mayor of Lancaster”.

An incredibly thoughtful man, Dan had fun finding perfect little gifts to surprise family and friends with. Among his favorite endeavors was the annual surprise birthday trip he would plan each year for wife Caryn, taking her to that most romantic of cities, Paris, for her 50th. Dan told her that ” Every artist should see Paris at least once! ”

Dan was a skilled gardener and would spend hours every nice day tending to his vegetable and flower gardens. His favorite plant was the Elephant Ear (colocasia), of which he had a collection of over 20 varieties.

Most of all he loved his wife and best friend Caryn. Dan and Caryn spent 37 wonderful years together in which they settled in Strasburg, grew their little homestead, loved and raised three golden retrievers ( in succession: Sedona, Sienna, and Shanagolden), made many dear friends and traveled to places in the U.S. and abroad.

In addition to wife Caryn and (dog) Shanagolden,, he is survived by sisters: Kathy and Julie, brothers; Christopher, Robert, Michael, and Kenny, nieces; Katy and Mary and Megan, nephew: Bill, great nieces and nephews: Sean, Kelly, Jake, Alex, and sisters and brother-in-laws; Bonnie and Alan, and Mary. He is preceded in death by a brother Jimmy.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543 717-560-5100

A very nice tribute to a very nice man! Caryn, Dan and I enjoyed some good music together: Long’s Park, the XPN festival and Lancaster Roots & Blues. And it was fun wandering around downtown Lancaster with them on First Friday. I’m glad I got to know him. Again, Tim and I express our heartfelt condolences. Rest in peace, Danny.
