Charles R. Winter, M.D.

Charles R. Winter, MD, 90, of Lancaster, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the Mennonite Home.

He was the husband of Anita B. Bratz Winter, with whom he celebrated 56 years of marriage this past January 19th. Born in Magdeburg, Germany, he was the son of the late Carl and Margaret Maedle Winter.

Dr. Winter served in the Medical Corps providing medical services for six years.

Dr. Winter had been a physician and reknowned orthopedic surgeon in the Lancaster area, providing care for patients at the St. Joseph Hospital, where he served as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery, and in his own practice, Winter Orthopedic Clinic and Colonial Hall Rehabilitation Center on Rider Ave. In 1963 he garnered national attention after reattaching a severed arm then again in 1970 when he successfully attached one of the nation’s first Myo-Electric prosthetic arms.   His practice spanned over 45 years.

Dr. Winter served on the board of The Lancaster County Conservancy 1972 to 1991 and a member of the Lancaster Medical society. He recently made a substantial donation to Millersville University to build the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center.  Dr. Winter served as a lifetime member of the Republican Senatorial Inner Circle.

In addition to his wife, Anita, he is survived by his children: Rebecca DeWinter-Schmitt married to James Schmitt of Washington DC, Stephanie married to Michael Owens of Lancaster, Victoria Winter of Los Angeles, CA, Christina married to Michael Richardson of Millersville, and his son Charles R. Winter Jr. of Arlington, VA. He is also survived by his 7 grandchildren: Cole, Tyson, Parker, Reese, Hayden, Sophie and Max. He was preceded in death by his brother, Andre Winter.

Friends will be received on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 from 9:30-11AM at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA, with the Memorial Service to follow at 11AM. I am so sorry for your loss. I worked at Ruby Tuesday’s where he and his wife came in often. He was incredibly sweet. I have served them multiple times, we all appreciated their kindness. We will miss seeing him, I know I already do.
