Charles E. Flowers, Sr.

Charles E. Flowers, Sr. entered into his eternal rest on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at Lancaster General Hospital with his family by his side.  He was born August 20, 1917 in Bainbridge, PA, the son of the late Christian and Alice (Kinsey) Flowers.  He married Edith Frank in 1948 and celebrated 55 happy years of marriage with her before her passing in 2003.

Charlie, or Posey, as he was fondly known, was a Veteran of WWII, having served in the Army in Europe, Africa and Middle Eastern conflicts.  In his early years, he was a truck driver hauling cattle for local farmers.  Later, after his service time, he worked at the Marietta Army Depot and Olmsted AFB in Middletown.  He worked as a security officer for a local retailer before being a part-time school bus driver, and later retiring from New Standard Corp in Mount Joy.  He gave many years of dedicated service to his community with the Maytown-East Donegal Fire Company and was one of the founders of the Maytown Ambulance Association.  He was a lifetime member of both organizations.  He also spent a number of years working as a Special Police Officer before the township hired full-time police officers.

Charlie will be greatly missed by his children: Jane (Hess) O’Donnell of Lancaster, and Charles E. “Ed” Flowers, Jr. of Manheim; as well as his grandchildren: Sheila (Alan) Brodbeck, Jodi (Daniel) Hess Cunningham, Charles E. Flowers III, and Brittany Peters; and a sister, Virgie Keck Bair.  Charlie also had 11 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.  He was preceded in death, in addition to his wife, by his siblings: Jake, John, Allen, Carrie Derr, Mary Nye, Russell, Bill, and Sally.

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Reich’s Evangelical Congregational Church, 338 Stacktown Rd, Marietta, PA 17547 with Pastor Dan Blank officiating.  Family and friends will be received from 10-11 AM at the church.  Interment will be at Maytown Union Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Charlie’s name to Reich’s Evangelical Congregational Church.  To send the family online condolences, please visit SnyderFuneralHome.com.
