Carolyn Dickerman Trythall, 73

June 15, 2017

Mrs. Carolyn Dickerman Trythall, 73, of Lancaster, PA passed away June 15, 2017 at Hershey Medical Center.

The only daughter of Lt. and Mrs. Carroll H. Dickerman, Carolyn was born March 6, 1944 in Washington, DC. She earned a B.A. in art education
from University of MD and then studied her teacher’s work at the Royal Ballet School in England. Carolyn taught art in the DC area. She then established Studio One Dance in Gaithersburg, MD and created the Lancaster School of Ballet in PA, where students learned ballet and the importance of self-respect. She also founded Ballet Theater of Lancaster, where she was artistic director for 18 years. In addition, Carolyn was a professor at F&M College and also a senior national dance examiner for the Cecchetti Council of America (CCA). Carolyn studied at the National Ballet of Canada and was a licentiate of the Imperial Society of the Teachers of Dancing. Carolyn volunteered at the Fulton and was an active member of: Dance Masters of America, American Association of University Women, National Society of Arts and Letters, Town and Country Garden Club, and Coterie. One of Carolyn’s greatest joys was singing in the church choir.

In addition to her husband of 50 years, Raymond Trythall, she was deeply loved by her daughter’s family: Kelly, Dave, and Ethan Zellers of Baltimore, MD; and her son’s family: Randy, Anita, Henry, and Catie Trythall of Lancaster, PA.

Carolyn’s life will be celebrated at 2pm on July 8, 2017 at St. Edward’s Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Carolyn Trythall Scholarship via the Cecchetti Council of America, 22393 Meadows Avenue, Flat Rock, Michigan, 48134.

Condolences to the Family

Mrs. T taught me the power of physical movement when I was just a youngster, relentlessly encouraging me, helping me discover parts of myself that I did not know prior. She was full of energy, positivity, and good humor. She was also a demanding and strong woman who brought out the best in us. I miss her and am grateful for all she gave to us.

I regret that I only learned of Mrs. T’s passing over one year later. It greatly saddens me, as I had hoped to see her again at an adult ballet class. I started earnestly studying ballet with her in my 30s and she never once made me feel like it was foolhardy to begin at such a “late” age. She saw my passion and devotion and encouraged me and gave me all the help I needed. I even progressed to pointe which was a dream come true. Not all teachers will entertain the idea of an adult doing that, but Mrs. T never made me feel like it was out of grasp. I remember how she’d still demonstrate what she could and looked so elegant and graceful while doing so. Her beautiful smile and perfect placement of her arms sticks in my mind. I will miss her very much. Condolences to her family. I’m quite sure she is dancing away effortlessly and without any pain now.

Dear Ray,
I was saddened to hear of Carolyn’s passing, particularly so, as I was reminiscing recently about the fun we had under her tutelage as we attempted tap dancing.   She was extremely tolerant and patient with her middle-aged inept students.
My sincerest condolences.  I have many fond memories.

Dear Ray,
I am so sad to read of Carolyn’s passing. My heart goes out to you and your family. I knew you both through Welcome Wagon, but my girls loved learning to dance with Mrs T.  I can only remember Carolyn smiling and brightening a day even more!

Mrs. T made a huge difference in my daughter’s life. She was the mentor and advocate Sarah needed. Dance was important, yes, but self respect was primary. She will be remembered and missed.
