Carl J. Schleck, Jr.

Carl J. Schleck, Jr. died October 4, 2012 at the age of 86. He was a resident of Willow Valley Retirement Community.

Carl is survived by his wife of 31years, Dorothy Mae (Osterhaus, Buesking) Schleck and predeceased by his first wife of 29 years, Margaret Jeanne (Fitton) Schleck.  He is also survived by a daughter, Kathryn L. He was the second of three children of Carl J. Schleck and Hattie Maud (Will) Schleck of Oak Park, Illinois. He is survived by a sister, Lucile Schick in Phoenix Arizona and predeceased by a brother, Frank Schleck of Marion, Illinois. He had four grandchildren, Megan Alexander, Katy Alexander, Patrick Schleck, and Brent Schleck.

Carl was born and raised in Oak Park, Illinois where he attended St. Angela grade school and Oak Park and River Forest Twp. high school. He attended Purdue University for one term before being inducted into the Navy in 1944. After training, he served in the Pacific Theater in WWII as an ETM 2/c until mid1946 when he was discharged. He returned in 1946 to Purdue from which he was graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 1949.

His business career started in 1949 in Menasha, Wisconsin at Marathon Corporation, a Paper and Paperboard Packaging company. He stayed with Marathon through its purchase by American Can Company in 1957 and again by James River Corporation in 1980 from which he retired in 1991 from his last position of Corporate Director of Purchasing.  During these 42 years he spent time in various locations including Menasha, WI, Chambersburg, PA, Neenah, WI, Fairfield CT, and Richmond, VA where he retired with Dorothy. He and Dorothy subsequently moved to Willow Valley in 2006.

Carl’s two major hobbies, particularly after retirement, were playing bridge, and golfing (avidly if not well).
