Betty Kegler, 88

Betty Gunzenhauser Schell Kegler, 88 , died peacefully in her sleep after a brief illness. She was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church, a volunteer for Lancaster Country Day school, an avid bridge player, a member of the Hamilton Club, and Lancaster Country Club where she enjoyed playing golf until the end. She was devoted to her family and her many friends in Lancaster and York.

Her grandfather, Christian Gunzenhauser, founded the Gunzenhauser Bakery that was later run by Christian’s son, her father Frank Gunzenhauser.  An accomplished artist, Betty attended Finch Junior College in New York, studied art at Parsons School of Design in New York where she graduated with the Class of 1942.  In 1943, Betty married Lt. Herbert Schell, a Navy pilot in WWII, who flew transport missions in the Pacific.  He passed away after a loving marriage of more than thirty years.  She remarried to John Kegler of York, who precedes her in death.

She is survived by her children, Herbert Michael Schell, married to Barbara, of Los Angeles, Thomas Franklin Schell of Lancaster, Barbara Gunzenhauser Schell, married to Tim Allen of Birmingham, MI, Martha Davis Schell Mohn of Lancaster, and five grandchildren: Eric Schell, Rebecca Mohn, Andrew Mohn, Tim Allen, Jr., and Christian Allen.

She lived an exemplary life and will be remembered with love by all who knew her. 

Memorial Service will be held at Highland Presbyterian Church, 1801 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, PA on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at 3 PM.  Interment will follow in Highland Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden.  Friends may pay their respects to the family at the church from 2 until 3 PM.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Betty’s memory to Lancaster Country Day School, Director of Development, 725 Hamilton Rd., Lancaster, PA 17603.  Arrangements by Charles F.
