Barbara Karpouzis Valavanes, 90

January 06, 2016

Barbara Karpouzis Valavanes, 90, of Mennonite Home, fell asleep in the Lord on Epiphany Day, January 6, 2016. She was born in 1925, in Pyli, Kos, Greece where she enjoyed an idyllic childhood, shared with her beloved brothers, Andrew and (Capt.) Gus, and sister, Nena, wife of Andrew Valavanes. Mussolini’s occupation caused her family to flee to the United States in 1933. Her early years here were difficult due to the Great Depression and her father’s death in 1939. She was the daughter of Nicholas A. Karpouzis and Domnitsa Papademetriou Karpouzis, who reposed in 1964.

She graduated from J.P. McCaskey High School in 1945 and Elizabethtown College in 1980. Both of her alma maters bestowed Distinguished Alumna Awards on her. She later earned a teaching certificate from Franklin & Marshall College. She taught English as a Foreign Language in the School District of Lancaster for over 30 years. She not only taught her immigrant students the English language but reveled in teaching them cross cultural understanding and respect. In her classroom it was impossible to not be inspired by her strong patriotism for her adopted country. In 1983, she received a Congressional Citation for Service to Community and Nation.

During WWII, she was a top seller of War Bonds and stood on street corners in Lancaster in full Greek costume to earn money for the Greek War Relief. She was also an Air Raid Warden. Her ardent war efforts were partly fueled by the fact that the love of her life was serving in Germany. In 1947, she married him, Michael J. Valavanes, long time proprietor of the Sun Restaurant. He passed on in 1983.

Her considerable community involvement and awards include: Organization of and participation in Veterans, Memorial and Loyalty Day parades, Girl Scout Leader, the Planning Committee for the 250th celebration of Lancaster, the Naturalization Day Committee on which she proudly served for 68 years, Honors from the Community Action Program for her volunteer work at Crispus Attucks Center, Quota Club “Woman of the Year”, Human Rights Award by the NCCJ for her compassion for people of all races, religions, and nationalities. She twice received the Lancaster Newspapers’ Red Rose Award – in 1987 and 2011.

Barbara was a devoted and active member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church where she taught Sunday School for over 30 years, Greek School, and created the idea of the Community Christmas Card for the benefit of the Church Building Fund. She was one of the first two women to serve on the Church Council. She loved visiting the hospitalized and shut-ins. She served the Prison Ministry for 35 years. She helped hundreds to prepare for their American Citizenship. Her home was always open to foreign students who needed a family for any holiday.

Barbara was a co-founder of the local chapter of the Daughters of Penelope and served four terms as president. She chaired the Daffodil Days Committee for the American Cancer Society for 41 years. She was also a member of the Philoptochos (friend of the poor) Society, a founder of the Pan Coan Society in Lancaster, and a member of the Chiotiko Society of St. George.

In retirement, she enjoyed extensive travel, having visited six continents. She also enjoyed her membership and fellowship in the PASR Lancaster branch of retired teachers. She was recognized for the many volunteer hours she gave to this organization.

Her highest devotion was to her family and friends. She was a loving mother to James M, who preceded her in death in 1972, and Nancy Val, wife of Kosta N. Kambouroglos. She adored her grandchildren, Nicolas, Varah Lynette, and Michael. Her extended family of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, in-laws, cousins, and former students, filled her life with laughter, support, and love.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 11AM at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church 64 Hershey Ave Lancaster, PA 17603 with the Rev. Dr. Alexander Goussetis, Rev. Hector Firoglanis, and Rev. Alexander Veronis officiating. Viewings will be on Friday (6-9PM) with a Trisagion Service at 7:30PM, and again Saturday morning (10-11AM). Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made in Barbara’s memory to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund – P.O. Box 6303 Lancaster 17607-6303, or the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, or The Philoptochos Society, or Founder Memorial Scholarship of the Daughters of Penelope all can be mailed to the church office 64 Hershey Ave Lancaster, PA 17603.

Dear Nitsa, Kosta and family,
Please accept my condolences on Barbara’s passing. She was a good woman and an invaluable asset to the Greek community in Lancaster. She was a friend, a mentor and an inspirational teacher to me. I will always remember her as one of the rarest people I have come to know and befriend. May her memory be eternal.

Dear Nitsa, Kosta, and family:
Please accept my sincere condolances for the passing of Thea Barbara. It was always such a happy time to come to Lancaster to hang out at Theo Gus’ Steak Shop, and spend time visiting your wonderful family (not to mention all the delicious home-made Greek feasts), and stories of days gone by. All of you will always be such an inspiration to me with your time, never-ending energy, and dedication to your family, God, and your Church. Thea Barbara is now home, joined with her family who had passed on before her, and Heaven has gained another beautiful angel. Love to all of you.

I have such vivid childhood memories of Mrs. Valavanes at church and annual Greek picnics where she  and her wonderful extended family welcomed us “out of towners”.  I moved away from the area, but when I returned for family events both happy and sad.  Barbara was  there for my family and her presence was always heart-warming.

Dear Kosta, Nitsa, Nikoli, Varah, and Michael,
You all know how I, Fotini, and my whole family felt about Mrs. V. She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. The loss is enormous, but her legacy will go on forever. She was a caring friend to all, and a champion for the disadvantaged. She was a true lady. She loved her Lancaster Greek community, and the Lancaster community at large. In her passionate persuit of advocacy the causes she strongly believed in she gained the respect of every one, even those with whom she disagreed. I had the privilege and good fortune to be a student of Mrs. V. She not only taught me English, but helped me adjust to my new country. She helped me complete my college applications and took me on my college visits. As you very well know, she remained a very, Very good friend and part of my family to the very end. For all this I remain very grateful. May her memory remain and everlasting. With all our love,

Dear Nancy and family,
Mrs Valavanes was an amazing human being!  My parents first met her when they lived in the top apt of the corner house, two doors down from your parents. She taught my mother how to cook delicious Greek foods and kept in touch with her throughout her life while my parents lived on Virginia Ave.  When I was a student at McCaskey High School I well remember how the students loved her. No matter how busy she was, she always had a warm smile for me when I passed her in the hallways. I now live in Wisconsin and am so grateful that a friend of mine told me of your mothers passing.  Thinking of her and reading her obit took me back many years. I hadn’t realized the extent of her giving to so many people throughout the years!  I am sorry for all of our loss of a wonderful woman!  …but most of all, I’m sorry for your loss of a terrific mother…and happy for you that you had such a lovely role model in your life.

Dear Nancy and family, our deepest condolences for your tremendous loss.  Mrs. V was always so thoughtful, lively, caring, warm, loving, and a truly remarkable person that touched so many lives.  She started as an ESL teacher to my brothers and sisters but quickly became part of our family because she brought such warmth and love in all that she does.  She was a genuine teacher and opened her hearts to those that needed her.  We are blessed having known such a beautiful person inside and out.

Dear Nitsa, Kosta and family,
I am so saddended to hear of the passing of my beloved Mrs. Valavanes.  She was an extraordinary woman of great character, deep compassion, profound wisdom, extreme bravery, intense passion, and unbelievable intellect.  She personified everything that is good and admirable about humanity and and about our Hellenic culture, in which she took great pride.  Her ministry of love, giving and support to those that came into her life is one that is unparalleled not just in our community, but far beyond.
Her dedication and devotion to her family, her students, and her extended family throughout the world is like no other.  Those of us who were blessed to know her had the privilege of having a role model of a woman who seemingly had no limits to what a woman can accomplish and how many people she could impact positively in her life.
May her memory be eternal, may her example of her extravagent love as Christ taught us to love may be one that we all strive to emulate, with God’s help!  May the inspiration that she gave to us through her Christ-like walk remain with us even as her memory remains in our hearts and minds!
May God give you comfort and peace as he receives one of his true angels by his side!
With all of our love,
The Bambridges

Nancy,
I am not sure that you may remember me, but I used to work at Mennonite Home for quite sometime before I left to pursue my career as a nurse. It was because of your mother and her positive and loving spirit that I kept going despite my failure. She was like my grandmother or yiayiá as you would say in Greek. She was the light to my darkness. I loved her like she was my family member and now I miss her so dearly.

January 08, 2016

Dear Domnitsa Kosta and Family our thoughts and prayers are we with you and may the Lord give you strenght to go through this perion of mourning, Thea Barbara was an exceptional human being and to discribe her achivments one has to write a whole book about her , like she use to say to us when god made me he broke the mold afterwards, she will always be close to our harts, and never be forgotten. January 08, 2016

Dear Kosta, Domnitsa, Nicholas, Vara and Michael,
Diana and I wish to extend a more public acknowledgement of your mother and grandmother’s special loving qualities.
The Greek American community of Lancaster lost one of its most illustrious and loving members. She not only served her church community in extraordinary ways, her services were often felt throughout the Lancaster community and beyond. She was as proud an American as there ever could be. She loved life and loved so many that it was hard not to feel her presence in so many venues of our community.
She was a mentor to many including myself. When I  began  exploring the roots of our Lancaster Greek immigrant community, there was no one that knew more about who they were, where they lived, and where they came from. After her son Jim died, her passion for his life and her grief over his death could only be quenched by dedicating her life to help the youth of our community. She did this in a very special way. She acquired a college degree from Elizabethtown to teach and taught English to the many immigrants who were coming into our community throughout the seventies and eighties and that included not only the Greek immigrant, but other groups and especially the many Vietnamese who hold her up as a major inspiration for their many successes.
She was passionate about the Philadelphia Phillies, which was the result of a successful indoctrination by her husband Mike, a phenomenal Philly Phanatic.
She loved her family and that included so many because they were not only those closest to her in Lancaster including her brothers and sister and their children, but those in Greece, Australia and Canada as well. She had such a need to stay in touch with everyone. She attended probably more funerals of our deceased parish members, that they will undoubtedly make a huge spiritual presence at her funeral.
And yes, there was no greater love and passion she had than for her daughter Domnitsa and her son-in-law Kosta and her grandchildren, Nicholas, Vara and Michael.
We feel fortunate to have had her for so long in our community. May her memory be eternal.
Diana joins me in extending our heartfelt sympathies to you.
Nikita (Zervanos)

It was with great sadness that I read of Barbara’s passing in yesterday’s newspaper. She was truly one of the most kind, loving, and wonderful persons that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.  My sadness is for you and your family and friends, Nancy, because there is no doubt that she is smiling happiky about seeing and being with her God and creator. (Frankly, I am surprised that he allowed us to have her for so long here on earth.)  The impact that she had on my life and the lives of so many people in this world is monumental to say the least.  I am a better person today because of the many examples she provided me thropughout the last 40 years of having known her.
Thoughts and prayers for you as you mourn her loss.

What a bright light you have shown to all whose paths you have shared!
Your contributions to the education of all has continued right up unto your homegoing.
Why there you were during the Christmas season encouraging your past student visitors to register and vote in this coming election. Your room was always full of family and friends, not to forget the many, many greeting cards you received. But, more importantly, always sending messages. There was a dutiful message of love and gratitude in each one of your notes that you penned.
It is with much love, honor and respect that we bring salutations to you, dear lady, and to your family.
Nancy was lauded by you, as the best daughter. You always staed that you couldn’t “thank Nancy enough” for all of her daily visits and shared happenings theroughout your life. Lovingly, you shared how much you loved and appreciated, Nancy, her husband and family members. You always spoke of how “BLESSED’ and thankful you were to so many.
It is with distinguished honor that the PASR/LCSR retirees send to you and your many family members and loved ones, a HOMEGOING like no other.
Thank you, BARBARA, for your having shared your life with us.
Shalom, dear friend.

Our hearts and prayers go out to you and all the family.  Words can’t express how much she meant to our family.  Our trips to Lancaster were a joy.  She was a wealth of information about family history, Dan’s father and their lives on the island of Kos.  We loved her and her sister, Nena, brothers, Gus and Nono Andy so much. Many fond memories will be deep in our hearts.  Thank you for coming to Stacey’s wedding. Your brought her smile and her love for our family with you.  I could see her smile and Greek dancing with us!

Thea Barbara, I remember your many kindnesses when I was a little girl and your unending loyalty and devotion to your children and grandchildren and dozens and dozens of cousins like me. You were a big personality in a family of big personalities! Many people think Arianna Stasinopoulou Huffington is the Greek woman who originated amalgamating the news, but everyone who knew you knows otherwise. You had limitless information on a variety of subjects. In conversation on almost any topic, you would have insight and knowledge from your studies and life experience. You had opinions. You wrote long letters in your even and elegant handwriting. I remember your complete dedication to Theo Mike, after whose death you wore black for years. We delighted when you took on lighter neutrals and eventually returned to the most vibrant colors. You endured heartbreak and recognized beauty. You ran on an internal engine with great capacity. Your many causes and projects are too vast to be named in one obituary. This is the true measure of the richness of your life, that you touched the lives of so many people yet always kept your family close. I see your grace and work ethic in your grandchildren and I know that makes you a proud yia yia! Thank you for being an inspiration to me.
I cannot join the service on Saturday, but I am honoring you by reminiscing about you with my family (Greg, Callum, Bazzy and Rowan)

Mrs. V… What can I say about the greatest person that I had ever known. You have effected my life ever since I have been born. You were there from day 1….Over the years we have been thru many tribulations, some happy some sad…but we grew stronger and stronger. You gave me insights that I couldnt see for myself. You made me a better person for it. As you said I was a work in progress and the last time we spoke, you told me your work was done and just keep the faith and it all will be okay. For this I owe you my heart, for you were the only one that knew what was in my heart. Those long talks we had will forever be with me. It saddens me so that you have gone but the way I look at God has gained his mightiest angel. I will never forget you…..me agape Tom Gerasklis.

My condolences to the family. I will always remember her fondly. I came to this country in 4 th grade and didn’t speak English. Barbara was my ESL teacher in Elementary school and Jr. High. I guess I was a stubborn student and didn’t want to learn English. Mrs. Valvanes was determined to teach me. The next day she brought me Easter Candy, it was the only way I would pay attention to learn the language. I also became a school teacher and I will always remember Mrs. Valvanes patience and kindness. May she rest in Peace! (Αναπαυσου έν Ειρήνη)
