August J. Schulz, MD, 85

February 21, 2018

August J. Schulz, MD, 85, of Holtwood passed away surrounded by his five daughters and one son on February 21, 2018 at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late August Schulz and Mary Gegg Schulz. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Rita Weisser Schulz.
August “Gus” grew up on Saint Joseph Street in Cabbage Hill, an area of the City of Lancaster still known for its traditional name relating to a largely German population in the 1900s. Gus graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School, Franklin & Marshall College and University of Pennsylvania Medical School receiving his medical doctor degree. He served his internship at Misericordia Hospital, Philadelphia.
Gus served as a general medical officer in the U.S. Army stationed in Korea and Valley Forge Army Hospital from 1959-1961.
After six years in family practice in Lancaster, he attended the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, for a residency in psychiatry and received certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He returned to Lancaster and private practice in psychiatry from 1969-1974.
Gus later served as medical director of the Lancaster Guidance Center and staff psychiatrist at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. He then served as Director of the Psychiatric Unit of the Lancaster General Hospital from 1981-1995.
Gus was a past member of the Lancaster County Medical Society, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Association and the American Psychiatric Association. He also served on the board of the Arch Street Center and as a long-term member of the Rotary Club of Lancaster.
Throughout his life, Gus enjoyed music and was a performer of accordion, trombone and baritone horn. He had performed and served as student conductor at Lancaster Catholic High School and was a member of the Franklin & Marshall College marching band. He also played with the New Holland Band and with the Lancaster Liederkranz house band with his father, August, his brother, J. Albert, and many extended family members. He loved nature and especially relished time with family and friends at Broadkill Beach, DE, and the Tucquan Valley. Gus also belonged to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Lancaster.
Surviving are five daughters and one son: Maria Schulz of Lititz, Valerie Asuncion of Lancaster, Lisa wife of Thomas McCann of Glenmoore, Angela wife of Christopher Bensinger of Pottstown, Helene wife of Timothy Evans of Lancaster and August Schulz III of Holtwood. Also surviving are a brother, J. Albert husband of Peggy Schulz of Lancaster and 12 grandchildren: TJ, Abbie, Tyler, Maddie, Emily, Annelies, Grace, Adam, Timmy, Charlie, Mia and Ellie.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a visitation from 6-8PM on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at the Charles F. Snyder Jr., Funeral Home and Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. The Rosary will be prayed at 745PM. Condolences to the Family

March 08, 2018

We are sorry to have missed the funeral as we were away for much of the winter. Rita and Gus lived across the street from us with their wonderful family. They were role models for us and provided us with goals to emulate for our own family. They instilled in our children a continuing and profound love of music. We feel fortunate to have had Gus and Rita and their 6 great children be such an important part of our children’s and our lives. Dorothy and Bob Gottlieb

I extend my most caring sympathy to the entire Schulz family – I know most assuredly you are all just as admirable and wonderful as Gus…. and Rita!
I was in their class of 1950 at LCHS – we were an amazing class and continued to enjoy each others company whenever together.  I am pictured in our Year Book dancing with Gus at our Senior Prom.  After graduation, Rita and I worked at Armstrong Cork Company and frequently enjoyed having lunch together.  I have always enjoyed attending class reunions and remember fondly our good times together. As our class President, Gus would always give a short presentation and one time Rita interrupted and corrected him so many times, he finally looked at her sternly and said, “Rita, I AM THE PRESIDENT!!”  We all chuckled.  I last saw Gus at our last reunion hosted by our gracious friend Marilyn Mester Berger – our future reunions will never be the same without our President… and our Rita.
Unfortunately, I was unable to attend Gus’ services, however I will always be grateful to have known and enjoy the caring bond of friendship with Gus and Rita – they were both such extraordinary people and will be greatly missed by their classmates.

It is with a heavy heart that we read about the passing of Gus.  He was a fine man, a wonderful physician and a friend as a neighbor.  As we travel at this time of year we cannot attend the service.  However, we share in your sorrow and rejoyce with you as you celebrate his earthly life and the beginning of his eternal life.   Susan & John Garofola

To the Gus Schulz family: I know we all age and some day it is our turn to pass on but it still felt like a portion of my life was gone when I read about Gus.  I worked with Gus at the Lancaster Guidance Center and will never forget his kindness and brilliance as a mental health practicioner.  He was always supportive a great mentor,  and well liked by staff and his patients.  Community mental health is exceedingly difficult and he perfromed brilliantly.  I began working with him when I was 22.  It truly feels like a chunk of shared memories are gone.  I feel for your loss and hope you can sit together as a family and share some of the great past stories of his life.  Sincerely, Barbara Keller Satosky

To the entire Schulz family
I was saddened to hear of the passing of your beloved father, brother, grandfather and friend to many however, we must remember He has gone to a much better place and is waiting for all of you.  He, as well as your entire family, have provided such joy with your beautiful voices and musical abilities.  You all participated in my Dad’s service 6 years ago.  I know I will see Dad again as you will all be with Gus, down the road.  Young Gus, thank you for being such a good friend to Eric over the years.

Dear Maria, Valerie, Lisa, Angela, Helene and Gus,
Uncle Al and I are so proud of you and so touched by the love and care you showed together for you Dad.  The few hours we were privileged to spend with you during the last few days of Gus’s life touched both of our hearts and souls.  Hearing you sing to him in harmony all the songs he loved to hear you sing during your growing up years, was such a gentle and beautiful way to ease your Dad’s way into eternity. And Gus, your gentle humor, and constant care of your Dad was a true gift to him. Your Dad was our brother, we will miss him, but know that he is with Rita again, at last, and with the God he served throughout his long and dedicated life.
With much love,
Aunt Peggy
