Areti Tsidonis, 76

Areti Tsidonis, 76, of Lancaster, passed away Sunday, April 11, 2010 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Paliopirgos, Epirus, Greece, Areti was the daughter of the late Leonidas and Aphrodite (Prinzis) Valavanis.  She was the loving wife for 31 years of the late Emmanouel C. Tsidonis, who died in 1994.

Areti and Emmanouel loved each other very much; not only were they partners in business, but they were partners in life.  They worked side by side at Famous Cottage, 11 West Chestnut Street for many years before it closed in the early 90s.  They opened their Central Market stand, Areti’s Greek Delights, in 1993, which Areti operated for 17 years. Her market stand was not only where people would buy her delicious pastries, but would share their thoughts, joys, and sorrows, and she brought them comfort and peace.

A member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Areti was a member of the Philoptochos Society, and volunteered at the annual church bazaar.  She was a faithful, loving, resilient, courageous, independent woman with a strong work ethic.  She was known for her great hospitality. She loved spending time with her family both here and in Greece. She was most happy making pita at the family home in Vissani, Greece.  Areti adored her grandchildren and they adored her.

Areti is survived by her children, Dr. Olga Tsidonis Pratt, wife of Benjamin A. Pratt, of Lancaster, Aphrodite Tsidonis Botis, wife of Alexandros Botis, of Ioannina, Greece, three grandchildren, Rebecca T. and Emmanuel Joshua “EJ” Pratt, and Raya Areti Botis, sisters, Vaselia, wife of George Alvanos, and Chrysanthi, wife of John Souras, all of Athens, Greece, and many other relatives in Lebanon, PA, New York, and Greece.

Areti’s family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the doctors and nurses of the LGH Trauma-Neuro unit on 5 Lime who took wonderful compassionate care of their mother.

Funeral Services will be held at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave., Lancaster, PA 17603 on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 10:30 AM.  Viewings will be held at the church Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 PM and Wednesday morning from 9:30 until 10:30 AM.  A Trisagion Service will be held Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM.  Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park.  Please omit flowers, contributions in Areti’s memory may be made to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave., Lancaster, PA 17603.  Charles F. Areti was a beloved aunt. She always showed tremendous kindness and generousity towards everyone but especially her family. Never a day passed that she did not continue to remember her beloved husband, Manolis. Areti means virtuous and I feel it was a fitting name.
Whenever I go into the market I will remember her. She was the last living member of our family who ran the Famous Cottage which included my father, mother, Uncle Gus and two great uncles. May their memories be eternal.

Though I didn’t know your mom well, my visits to her stand were always a high point of market days. She was so kind and gentle.

Olga,

We just today heard about the passing of your Mom, our beloved former neighbor and friend.  I wish we knew so we could have paid our respect.  The Malles family knew her for over 20 years and she will be missed.  She loved giving our kids cookies everytime we could get down to market and they loved her warm hugs.  They are very sad to have lost her as are we.  Please call if you need anything.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you and Aphrodite on the loss of your mom.

Dear Olga & Aphrodite & family,

My grandmother died about 12 years ago and she was the PA Dutch version of Areti. When I started getting to know your mother I always called her my Greek grandmother. They were built the same, walked the same, great cooks, didn’t want anyone in their kitchen (Areti told me this), a wonderful ear for listening and wonderful at telling stories. I will miss her as much as my own grandmother and my heart goes out to you and your family. One day when I visited her she was very sad because she missed her husband so much. Now they are together again and I’m happy for her. She will be missed so much by so many.

Much love,
Katy Conlin

When i was a little boy, my father would take me into the famous cottage alot. He was the man who ran the train that went down water street in Lancaster. He would always stop the train for lunch and go in and talk to Eddie and Manuel. And my wife always like to get the pastries from Areti from market. So, inclosing we are offering our Condolences to the rest of your family.
Joey and Joanny DeMora.

Many years ago I met Areti at Market by buying her stuffed grape leaves.  She always enticed me to try everything.  I loved her food and enjoyed many visits with her as her stand became a regular stop for me.  She touched my life and many others that she never met.  I often purchased her food, to share with my residents at Brereton Manor.   Her Spanikopita was especially liked and always considered a special treat.  I’m sure it was the love that went into making them that made it taste so good.   I was so sad when she stopped making her grape leaves but happy to still enjoy our conversations.  She will be remembered fondly by me each time I pass her market stand or serve what were my favorites from her.  I am thankful to have known her.

Olga and Aphrodite,

My tears flow as I remember these many, many years of friendship I have enjoyed with your Father, yourselves, and especially your Mother, dear Areti.
If I may, it started with the Dauphin Deposit Bank, I the teller, you and yours, the customer.  Yes, this is Kathy.
I have kept in touch all these years via the Market Stand, inquiring about you and at times, lucky enough to run into the both of you several times.
I want you to know that you family made a difference in my life. The sense of family, the love between you was so great.  I had never seen a family quite like yours. I never knew how much until I saw your Mama’s obituary in the paper today, Tuesday, the 13th of April.  Somehow, I felt that I had lost a member of my family.  To have been in touch nearly 30 years, watching the two of you grow up to have families of your own and continue to know Areti after your Father passed has been a privilege and I just can not believe it has ended.
My sadness is a seed compared to the fruit that you must bear and I am praying that you and your family believe that your Mama is walking towards your Papa this very moment and happy are they!  Together at last – again.
Theirs was a great love as was the love they held for the both of you.

My Most Heartfelt Thoughts and Great Fondness Forever,
Kathy Swisher

Areti will be greatly missed by me and my "ohandras moo" (husband) as it was our Saturday ritual when going to the Lancaster Farmer’s market to stop, chat (trying out my "Greek") and buying her wonderful "delights."  She became my "Alinika" mentor when I was planning a trip to Greece with my "i Mitera moo." She was patient with my language skills (or lack thereof) and was generous of her time and consideration.  She became like family to me and I even gave her a DVD of my travels.  I will return to Greece again someday.  I will be saddened every Saturday when I think of Areti.  "Ephredischto" and "Parakalo" for the way she enriched my life this past year.  I know she is looking forward to being with her "ohandras" whom she always spoke of and missed dearly.  To Olga and EJ, who I met on occasion at her stand, my heart goes out to you and your family. "Sagapo" Areti. Yassou.
With love,

It takes a special woman to raise two special daughters. I will always remember Mrs. Tsidonis with great fondness and admiration. Her legacy lives on in Olga and Aphrodite and her grandchildren.
May her memory be eternal and may God grant her a place of rest!
Much Love,
