Albert Edelson, 82

Albert Edelson, 82, of 1994 Sonora Lane, Manheim, passed away peacefully with family in attendance, on Wednesday, April 19th, at the Hospice By The Sea, in Boca Raton, Florida.  Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Louis Edelson and Bessie Pressman Edelson Leapman. His wife of 59 years, Sally H. Edelson, died in July 2005.  He is survived by three sons, Dr. Jeffrey M. Edelson, married to Elisabeth S. “Dolly” Shuster, Esq. of Manheim; Eric L., married to Susanne K. Edelson of Potomac, MD, and Gary M. Edelson, Esq. of Philadelphia; grandchildren, Samara F. and Robert A. Shuster-Edelson, Aaron N., and Rachel M. Edelson.  He is also survived by his sister, Annette Barnett, wife of the late Isa Barnett, of Santa Fe, NM, his step-brother, Herbert Leapman of Austin, TX, and his fiancee, Carol Carter.  He was predeceased by his sister Ruth Borkon, wife of Leonard Borkon, of Lancaster, and his step-sister, Thelma Garfinkle, wife of Fred Garfinkle, of Reading, PA.

He was a 1942 graduate of McCaskey high school and served in the Army during WW II.  After his honorable discharge he went to work for Armstrong Cork.  In 1946 he founded Lancaster Welding, which he owned and operated until 1976.  In 1976 he founded HDL, which was one of the first companies in the nation to manufacture prefabricated housing.  When he closed HDL and retired, he turned his lifelong interest in horses and thoroughbred racing into another career.  He became a trainer and created a thoroughbred rehabilitation center on his farm in Manheim, creating one of the first racehorse swimming rehabilitation centers in the United States, where he rehabilitated and trained several famous race horses.

Albert Edelson was an active member of Temple Beth El of Lancaster and the Lancaster Jewish Community Center.  He was also a member of the Thoroughbred Breeders Association.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, April 23rd, at the Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home and Chapel, Inc., 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA at 1:00 p.m., with Rabbi Stephan O. Parnes officiating.  Shiva will be held Sunday evening through Friday morning at the home of Jeff Edelson and Dolly Shuster, 1991 Sonora Lane, Manheim.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Temple Beth El Library Fund, 1836 Rohrerstown Road, Lancaster, PA 17601; Hospice By The Sea, 1531 West Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton, FL 33486; or the American Heart Association, 625 West Ridge Pike, Suite A100, Conshohocken, PA 19428, Attention: Memorial Department.
