William J. Groff, 88

William J. Groff (Bill), 88, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 12, 2013.  He was the husband of the late Elizabeth M. Huber (Betty), married 64 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by his son, Richard V. Groff, married to Deborah Groff of Lancaster.  He is also survived by three grandchildren, Brandy, Heidi and Dustin married to Anastashia J. Groff, and seven great-grand children.  He was preceded in death by his wife, his daughter, Judy, and six siblings.

Bill worked at Business Press for 29 years until they closed their doors.  He then worked for Intell Printing Company until he retired

Bill took the greatest pride in being able to serve his country aboard the U.S.S. Marshall (DD676)   during WWII.  He was a baker 3rd class and a gun fuse setter. His ship was involved in 8 major star operations in the Pacific. He received the Pacific Theater Ribbon (Eight Stars), Good Conduct Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, and Philippine Liberation Ribbon (Two Stars)

My grandfather would like to be remembered for his time in the service, being a good provider for his family, and always being honest.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Bill’s Funeral Service at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 414 East King Street, Lancaster, PA 17602 on Monday, June 17, 2013 at 2:30 PM with Rev. Joseph Burchill officiating.  Friends may view and visit with the family at the funeral home on Monday from 1:30-2:30 PM.  Interment will follow at Conestoga Memorial Park, Lancaster, with full military honors.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 131 S. Queen Street, Lancaster, PA 17603.  To send the family online condolences, please visit SnyderFuneralHome.com.

I remember Bill stopping in the AMVETS to have a soda while he waited for his wife as she was having her hair done. He was always interesting to talk to and I will miss him. As so many of the WWII Vets answer the final call his memory will always live on, God Bless the Greatest Generation.
