Victor J. Standish

Victor J. Standish, of Lancaster and Sanibel Island, Fl passed away on May 26, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in the Bronx, NY, Vic was the son of the late Victor J. and Ruth V. Standish.  Vic would have celebrated 14 wonderful years of marriage to Reinita Standish on September 24.  Vic moved with his family to Lancaster in 1946 where he completed his education, graduating from Lancaster Catholic in 1954.  Vic enlisted in the army and spent two years with the 2nd Armored Division in Europe.  He won a competitive appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point in 1956.  Upon his return from Europe, he declined his appointment and attended Franklin & Marshall College, graduating in 1961.

Vic’s business career began at Armstrong World Industries as a Cost Accountant, spending time in Fulton, NY & Pittsburgh, PA before his return to Lancaster in 1966.  In 1968, he assumed the position of VP/GM of the Baker Trust which owned gray iron foundries in Columbia and Myerstown.  In 1973, York Barbell Co. bought the foundries.  Vic continued to successfully manage the foundries through 1988, when York Barbell selected him to be CEO & President of York Barbell.  In 1998, Vic sold his interests to a York, PA financial group.

Vic was an avid boater and sport fisherman.  He fished for marlin and sailfish in Venezuela, Mexico and Costa Rica, tuna in Rhode Island and king salmon in British Colombia.  He caught and released a 500 pound class Atlantic blue marlin off the coast of NC in 1985.  Vic won the Rhode Island Yellowfin Tuna Tournament in 1987 and placed third in the Rhode Island Masters Invitational Tuna Tournament the following year.

Vic was a long time member of the Billfish Foundation and past member of BPOE 134 Elks and Lancaster Liederkranz.

Vic was a “cat” person. He loved all cats from the magnificent Siberian Tigers to the domestic short hair house cats and supported many of the national cat charities.  He leaves behind two of his favorites, Katka & Achilles.

Surviving are four children: Scott, married to Jeanine, of Lancaster; Susan, married to Zachary Lysek, of Bethlehem; Sally, married to Gary Jones, of Naples, Fl and Brendan Cubbin, of Chicago.  Vic’s four grandchildren are: Kyle and Kelsy Lysek and Emerson and Carter Standish.  He is also survived by three brothers, John A. of Lancaster, Richard T. of Atlanta, GA, and Thomas G. of Lancaster and a half-sister, Katherine Davies of Newport Beach, CA.

Friends will be received on Friday from 930-11AM at St John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Rd., Lancaster, PA, with the Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11AM. Interment in St Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Vic’s memory can be made to the Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 Lincoln Hwy. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of Vic’s family. Our boys, Jeb and I will sadly miss Vic. We adored his kindness and friendship and he always made us feel more like family. We felt the same way. We will miss Vic so much. His friendship meant so much to my family and I. All of our love to the family and we will always hold a special place in our hearts for our friend Mr. Standish.

Jeb, Robin, Chad, Kyle & Trey Young

My deepest sympathies to all of Captain Victor’s family and friends. I didn’t get a chance to meet him, but knowing that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and how much I enjoy my dear friend Sally’s company, I know I would have enjoyed her Dad’s just as much. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Rei,

We were stunned and deeply saddened when we learned of Vic’s passing and send you our heartfelt condolences. While we didn’t know him well, your obvious love for him told us all we needed to know. We are thinking of you at this most difficult of times.

With love and a huge hug,

Stefanie Valar and Ed Hauck

I didn’t know Vic well, but that didn’t matter to him. He always had a way of entering a room and spreading cheer to everyone near him. I will miss his hugs, but I feel honored to have met such an inspiring person. I really admired him. My condolences to Rei and his children as they say goodbye to a great man.

Sincerely,

Mandi Greathouse (Dr. Gibson’s office)

We will remember Vic as a positive, upbeat friend & neighbor and a prime mover behind the Lancaster Catholic weight room renovation! Our thoughts & prayers are with Rei & family.

Dear Scott, Susan and Sally,
I am sorry about the death of your father, please accept our prayers and sympathy.  Please lean on family and friends in this most difficult time.  I know somewhat how you feel since my mother has been gone for 15 years and my father for nine.  Please extend my regards to your mother also.  I remember all the fun we had on the outer banks and all the good times in your parent’s party basement.  I did send a sympathy card to Scott if I chose the correct Standish from the phone book.  It was for all of you.  Please take care and live in the good memories of your dad.
Love Karen and Mark Smoker – Karen formally Karen McGeehan
