Velma I. Wenger, 94
May 07, 2016
Velma I. Wenger, 94, of Brethren Village and formerly of New Holland, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Saturday, May 7, 2016. She was the daughter of the late Roland and Lillie (Leisey) Bowman. Velma was the wife of the late Walter F. Wenger, who died in 1988.
A graduate of New Holland High School, she was the Valedictorian of her 1940 graduating class. Later in life Velma earned a degree from Lancaster Bible College. She began her working years at Frank Ix & Sons in personnel. Later, she was employed at the New Holland Post Office as their first and only female employee. After marrying Walter Wenger, owner of Wenger’s Restaurant, she worked alongside him in the restaurant business. After selling the business, they both enjoyed many years of travel, traveling to places around the world, golfing, and winters in Florida. She continued to enjoy all of these activities after Walter’s death until she was well into her 80’s.
Velma was a longtime member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church, New Holland, where she faithfully taught the Adult Sunday School Class and hosted weekly Bible Studies for over 40 years.
Velma is survived by her daughters, Linda (Seifred) Troop, widow of Gene, of New Holland, and Glenda (Littlejohn) Greiner, wife of William, of Lititz. In addition she is survived by four grandchildren: David G. Troop, husband of Sherri, John M. Troop, husband of Michelle, William S. Greiner, husband of Kelley, and Angela Greiner McFadden, wife of Robert; and 9 great-grandchildren. Velma is preceded in death by her brother, Maurice Bowman, and a great-granddaughter.

Linda, so sorry for the loss of your mother. Not sure you remember me but I was in your homeroom at Garden Spot High School. I read obituaries and noticed your name early into the obit! My mother will be 101 next month, so I know what it means to be our age and still have a mother! Blessings to you at this time. Phyllis Miller Sauder
