Susan Elizabeth Mekeel Volker, 65

April 15, 2015

Susan Elizabeth Mekeel Volker — a loving, devoted and selfless wife, sister and friend — died at Lancaster General Hospital on Wednesday after a valiant 15-month battle with brain cancer.
Suzey was 65.
An East Hempfield Township resident, Suzey was born in York, the daughter of the late Thomas C. and Celestine Krantz Mekeel.
She was a graduate of Hempfield High School, Class of 1967, and Penn State University, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
Suzey was a banker for more than three decades, working at National Central Bank, Hamilton Bank and most recently at Susquehanna Bank, where she served as an assistant vice president and relationship associate in commercial lending.
It was a field that enabled Suzey to capitalize on her sharp mind for math, her meticulous attention to detail and her persistence in seeing tasks through to the end.
Suzey had a huge heart for family and friends, routinely putting the needs of others ahead of her own. Even as her illness progressed, Suzey focused her thoughts on the well-being of friends and relatives.
Her compassion extended to charitable causes. She was a generous supporter of nonprofit organizations that fight blindness, develop treatments for people with autism and oppose animal cruelty.
But as quick as she was to lend a hand, Suzey was just as quick to downplay her efforts.
She enjoyed gardening, taking her dog for walks and going on cruises.
Suzey was a member of Mt. Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod.
She is survived by her husband, James L. Volker. They would have celebrated their 28th anniversary on May 16.
In addition, Suzey is survived by three brothers: Peter C. Mekeel, husband of Audrey M. Mekeel; Daniel H. Mekeel, husband of Ann B. Mekeel; and Timothy T. Mekeel, husband of Alison R. Mekeel; all of Lancaster.
Suzey also is survived by: two nieces, Emily A. Mekeel, wife of Chad M. Cauler, Lancaster, and Paige E. Mekeel, Lancaster; two nephews, David C. Mekeel, Lancaster, and Colin T. Mekeel, Lancaster; and two great-nephews, Benjamin M. Cauler and Nicholas C. Cauler, both of Lancaster.
Suzey will be greatly missed by her family and friends as well as her beloved dog, Bonnie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Foundation Fighting Blindness Inc., PO Box 17279, Baltimore, Maryland 21298-9581.
A visitation will be held from 9-10 AM on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at the Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543 with a Graveside Service to follow at 11:30 AM at Greenmount Cemetery, 721 Carlisle Ave., York, PA 17404.

Condolences to the Family

Jim and Family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss.  I had the pleasure to spend time with Susan at company functions.  She was always kind and welcoming to us and so very, very proud of you Jimmy.  She had a great smile, positive, optimistic outlook and a laugh that was filled with joy and love.  It was always a pleasure to be with both of you.  Take very good care of yourselves and know that you are in our prayers.

Jim, I’m so very sorry to hear about Susan. She was such a caring and wonderful person. I enjoyed cleaning her teeth for almost 12 years. I’m not sure if she always enjoyed it but she always came with a smile. She will be missed.

I did not have many opportunities to meet Susan in person, but she was clearly the light of Jim’s life. He speaks of her fondly and loves her with all of his heart. My thoughts and prayers are with Jim and his family in their time of loss and grieving. May peace be with you knowing that Susan is now happy and healthy looking down from above.

Jimmy,
Our condolences go out to you and the family.  You and Sue have been in our prayers and we will continue to uphold you in prayer.  I’m sorry that I have another obligation on Saturday.  May you find encouragement and comfort as you are surrounded by family and friends.  And, may you be strengthened and find comfort in the days to come.
Lord bless you,

I am so saddened to learn that my dear high school friend, “Meekle,” lost her brave battle against cancer.  She had such a sharp mind, no matter what the subject, and I thanked her many times for helping me get through Trig class senior year!  Her patience, compassion, sense of humor, and love and concern for others were just as deep as her intellect, and I have many happy memories of both deep discussions and fun times.  Even though we lived on opposite ends of the country for many years, we stayed in touch, and I will miss her very much.  Sincere condolences to her entire family.  I hope you can stay strong and get through this difficult time.  With love, Nancy Shearer (“N.J.”)

Suzey and I worked in the Mortgage Department of Hamilton Bank together.  She was a kind and friendly person, with a great attention to detail.  I always enjoyed talking to her, both at work, and at Mortgage Banking functions.  We both loved a good cup of tea-will always think of you, Suzey,  when I have a cup.  My condolences to her family. She was a very wonderful person, and she will be missed.  Donna Kilgore
