S. Grant Stewart, 96
S. Grant Stewart, 96, of 300 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street, PA. died on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 following a sudden illness. He was a quiet man who lived simply and was always gracious towards others.
Grant was born in Caldwell, Idaho to Russell Alden and Pauline Aden Stewart. He grew up in the farm community of Battle Creek, Nebraska. In high school, he was a basketball player and trombonist. He attended the University of Nebraska and graduated in 1934 with a B.S.
Mr. Stewart taught in the Waverly consolidated School in Lancaster County, Nebraska from 1935-1937. During that time he coached the men’s basketball team and launched one student into a lifelong career in photography. He soon found work with the Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma as a chemist, ultimately transferring to Washington D.C. in 1950 to continue his work with Phillips while pursuing a law degree. He graduated from George Washington School of Law in 1954 and moved to Wilmington, Delaware to become a patent attorney with Hercules Inc. He retired from that company in 1976.
He was married to Norma Irene Stewart for 59 years before her death in 1999. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart moved to Willow Valley in 1988. He is a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster.
Mr. Stewart is survived by his son and daughter in law John D. and Martha Price Stewart, Norfolk, VA., a niece, Polly Stewart, Seattle WA.: a nephew, Paul Lien, Dallas TX, great niece, Kelly Lien, several cousins, many friends at Willow Valley, special friends Emory Champney and Michael and Marilyn Keehan. He was preceded in death by a sister, Adene S. Lien, who died in 1965.
A memorial service will be held in the Thomas Auditorium, Willow Valley Lakes Manor on Monday, February 11, 2008 at 2:00PM. Burial will be private. Please omit flowers.
