Roy R. Horst, 87

July 02, 2014

Roy R. Horst, 87, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Landis Homes Retirement Community. Born in Blue Ball, he was the son of the late Harry S. and Elizabeth (Rutt) Horst. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Doris J. Horst.

His career included working as a farmer in Lancaster and York counties as well as a carpenter, contractor, and builder in Tampa, Florida.

When residing in Florida, he was the founder and director of Lakewood Retreat. He helped build North Tampa Christian Fellowship, where he was a board member. He loved to sing, and was a song leader at church as well as a Sunday school teacher. After moving to Lancaster, he became a member of Millport Mennonite Church. Roy was a gentleman and friend to all. He was a man who had few critics.

Horst, husband of Cherie of Springfield, MO, Joyce A. Rusin, wife of Jerry of Dublin, OH, Mark A. Horst, husband of Jill of Valrico, FL; brother Lloyd R. Horst, husband of Elverta, of Harrisonburg, VA, sister June E. Forry, wife of Charlie of Garner, NC, 18 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Edith Hollinger and her husband Lloyd.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.  Roy was a wonderful man.  A truely gentle man and caring person and talented carpenter.  I still cherish the wall unit in my living room that was made by Roy years ago.  Doris, our women’s Bible study led by you still remains one of the best Bible studies I have ever attended.
May God bless this wonderful family.

Dear Aunt Doris, Marlin, Lois, David, Joyce, Mark, spouses, and families,
I so wish I could be there to celebrate Uncle Roy’s life with you and share my deep sympathy with you all. It would be so wonderful to see you all again, to reminisce about the past and catch up on our lives. My mind reels back to so many of our younger days when we shared happy times together. Almost every summer we anticipated that yearly visit from our cousins from Valrico, Florida and we always had relatives to visit when we ventured to the south.
I am certain Uncle Roy is receiving his heavenly reward for a life well lived and we will all be reunited some glad day! May God’s peace and blessing rest on you and yours during this difficult time.
Love,
Brenda and Daniel Grimes, Goshen, Indiana
