Robert N. Luft, Jr.

Robert N. Luft, Jr. passed away February 28, 2013 at the age of 66 of natural causes. He is survived by Daughters, Kristin Nommensen of Bakersfield, CA (Peter) and their children Conner, Ainsley & Shelby and Erika Myers of Concord, MI (Brady) and their children Brock, Brynn, Ellery & Reed.

Bob was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed mystery, historical fiction and the classics. He loved listening to music and his favorites were jazz and singers and songwriters from all genres.

A recent retiree, Bob was finally able to travel to Concord, MI where he joined his two daughters and seven grandchildren. This visit allowed Bob to meet his California grandchildren for the first time.

Bob was particularly fond of all things literary and we ask you to please leave a legacy of printed memories, stories, thoughts and messages on his behalf for his grandchildren. Please help us celebrate his life in the manner in which he lived; pensively, printed and personal.

Our deepest sympathy on the loss of a father, grandfather, friend, colleague and former classmate. Bob, my husband Bob and I were all in high school together and fondly say farewell to a great guy, along with many others, and good journey to a better place.

Sincerely,
R. Sylvia (Evans) Tagert, UDHS, Class of 1964

My sincere condolences to Bob’s family. Since he lived far from you I would like to tell you that he was extremely well respected by all his friends in Lancaster.  I’ve been acquainted with Bob solely in our fraternal meetings on Wednesday and Saturday evenings where his counsel was always listened to most recently when he addressed our Saturday meeting and shared his story.  I can tell you that a highlight of the evening was when he related about how happy he had been to have met with his family. On Saturday night we burn a candle in remembrance of group attendees who have left us, we now add our dear friend Bob to those of whom we will be thinking of fondly.

My deepest sympathy. We often talked about each having 2 daughters and all the grand children and the joy they all bring.  His greetings and hugs will be missed by all of us.  I was blessed to have known him.

We have many, many fond and cherished memories of Bob.

Here’s one….Bob and Jim went to the Delaware shore because he wanted to learn saltwater fishing. They spent the weekend fishing the Lewes, DE inlet. The fishing that weekend was terrible but Bob was thoroughly enjoyed himself. The only fish that was caught was a giant horseshoe crab that Bob managed to hook by the tail and reel into the shore. He didn’t know what it was and yelled "what the hell is that!" and was very excited that he caught something. We laughed about this for many years after.

One another fishing trip that same Summer, Bob, Jeff and Jim did some offshore fishing in the Delaware Bay. We were fishing in the rear of a large party boat, having a great time and catching a lot of fish when all of a sudden we were caught in a torrential downpour. Bob was standing directly under a water runoff and laughed as the water cascaded down for what seemed like an hour. We took home enough fish to feed us for the next 3 days. We sat around and talked about fishing, books, life and friendship all weekend.

In 2010 Carol and Jim were planning to move to Florida and as Jim was going through a difficult time Bob gave Jim "Atlantic High" by William Buckley from his personal library. As Jim read the book and shared his thoughts with Bob the fear and stress was relieved.
Bob reminded Jim not to damage the book jacket because it was a first edition. Unfortunately the jacket did get damaged and Bob said not to worry, keep the book as a going away present.
Jim as since read many books recommended by Bob and has enjoyed them all thoroughly.

Bob, Jim and Carol made many memories together over holiday dinners, football games in front of the tv and Saturday night burgers with fried eggs at the diner.

We will miss him dearly.

Love,
Jim and Carol Smith

I remember when we visited my Uncle Bob, Aunt Lillian and ‘Bobby’ since we lived in MI and they were in PA there weren’t a lot of visits. The visit I remember most was when we were around 12 or 13 Bob was teaching me to play chess, he was a pretty good teacher because I was beating him but we never did finish that game…. I have never played chess again but whenever someone talks about chess I always think of Bob. As the years went on we lost contact but recently through the wonder of facebook I had been able to reconnect with him and share some stories. Bob will be greatly missed.

All my love and prayers to his family.

Bob was a very respected & intelligent man. He was a regular at our Saturday night meeting. He didnt share often but when he did we listened. When the candle burns I will think of Bob L. and carry his message in my heart.
