Rita C. Snyder, 84

Rita C. Snyder, 84, of Lancaster, PA, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, September 11, 2009 at Lancaster General Hospital. She was the loving wife of the late Charles F. Snyder, founder and funeral director, of the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, Lancaster, PA. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September of 2000. Rita was born in Lancaster, PA and raised on Cabbage Hill. She was the daughter of the late Roland F. and Kathryn (Smith) Caskey.

Rita was an integral part of helping her husband with the family business since their marriage in 1950. She previously worked for Armstrong Cork Co. and for WGAL as a secretary and receptionist.

Rita graduated from St. Mary’s Parochial school. She was a 1942 graduate from Lancaster Catholic High School, where she played the French horn in the school band.

Rita was a life long member of the International Federation of Catholic Alumni. She was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, and a former member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. She was a member of the St. Philip’s Guys & Dolls and Women’s Auxiliary.

Rita enjoyed travel, going on cruises, going to the beach, especially Avalon and Stone Harbor, NJ, reading, music, watching old movies, and was an avid bridge player. Rita was well known for knitting her infamous dishcloths, and she loved giving them to her family and friends.

All her children attended St. Anthony’s Parochial School where Rita was a member of the PTO from 1958 to 1980.

After residing above their funeral home on East King Street for thirty-five years, Rita and her husband Charles moved to their beloved Springdale Farm home in Millersville.

Rita is survived by her son Charles F. “Chip” Snyder Jr., husband of Doreen V., of Lancaster, PA, daughter Christina A. Cunha, wife of Antonio, of Lancaster, PA, daughter Susan M. Bleacher, wife of Wes, of Conestoga, PA, daughter Patricia A. Geiger, wife of Thomas, of Boiling Springs, PA, daughter Kathryn M. Guidos, wife of Joseph, of Conestoga, PA, son Michael A. Snyder, husband of Donna, of Lancaster, PA, and twelve grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and three step great grandchildren. Rita is also survived by her brother Leo F. Caskey, of Lancaster, PA, brother, Edward Caskey, husband of Sally, of Elizabethtown, PA, sister Janice C. Stork, of Lancaster, PA, and sister K. Pat Zeller, wife of Robert, of Lancaster, PA. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Kline and Ellen Supko.

Rita had a courageous heart and she prevailed when all others would have given up. Her love of family and zest for life were an inspiration to all.

Rita’s family would like to thank the caring staff at The Glen at Willow Valley, the dialysis team at the Lancaster General Hospital Health Campus, the ER staff at Lancaster General Hospital, and all the physicians and nurses who took tremendous care of her.

Dear "Chip" and Family,
I’m unhappy that I will will not be able to attend your mother’s life celebration.  I now live in Florida and unable to travel.  Your Dad and Mother were my very first clients and I had the privilege of starting them on their first accounting system and filing their first business tax returns.  They were giants among our friends in Lancaster.  My heartfelt sympathies are deep.  It is hard to lose old friends.  Bless you and your family.  May your lives be as full and gracious as theirs.
Ted Fultineer

My deepest sympathy for you, Chip and your family, in the loss of your mother.
Louise Williams

My sincere sympathies go with your family.  When my father died,
chip was there for my family.  Your mother was a nice lady.  My mother speaks of her fondly.  She is in a better place.  You will see her again some day.

Chip and Family,
Sue and I want to offer our sincerest condolences on the passing of your mother. Losing a parent is always a difficult transition, even when that parent has lived a full life, and we wish all of you well in the time ahead.

Dear Chip, Doreen, Chad & Christina:
We heard the news of your mother & grandmother Saturday evening at Mass.  Dick was out of town & I was leaving early the next morning so we did not get the particulars until today.  We are so sorry for your loss.  I was attending my aunt’s memorial service in Houston this week end & was giving the opportunity to eulogize her by closing with this Poem for the Living I will share with you.  When I am dead cry for me a little.  Think of me sometime, but no too much.  It is no good for you or your wife or your husband or your children to allow your thoughts to dwell too long on the dead.  Think of me now and again as I was in life at some moment which is pleasant to recall.  But not for long.  Leave me in peace as I will also leave you in peace.  While you live, let your thoughts be with the living.
Fondly,
Dick & Charlotte

Dear Chip, Susan and all of Rita’s family,
Please know that you and your family are in our prayers during this sad time.  Rita was a wonderful woman, and her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who love her.
God Bless ~ Mary Anne Schweitzer Lewandowski

My deepest sympathy to you in the loss of your Mother/Grandmother.  I only knew her briefly, during the time of my husband’s dialysis treatments, which they shared at the Health Campus.  She was always so friendly and sweet.

May happy memories carry you through this sorrowful time.

I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Rita.  She was such a wonderful and caring person and I have fond memories of her and my mother who were such good friends.  I was so excited to see her again at Willow Valley Retirement Community when my mother in law was residing there and was glad that I had the chance to visit with her and catch up on things that were happening in the family.

She will be missed very dearly by her family and all of her friends.  Please accept my sincere condolences and Rita and her family will be in my thoughts and prayers.  I am sorry that I will not be able to attend any memorial services or the funeral as I have moved to Arizona.
With Deepest Sympathy,
Karen Ilvento McGinley

Your mother/grandmother was…kind, gentle, wise, strong, generous, funny, warm, welcoming, empathetic, unselfish, loving…I could go on and on and on.  A bright soul has left this earth, but a brighter light shines in heaven now.  I think of her reunited with deceased loved ones as they celebrate together. I know how much she will be missed here.  She will never be forgotten and lives on in all of you!  I loved her and have so many precious memories of her.  I am grateful that I had a chance to know someone like her in my life.  My earliest memories of visiting your home are filled with her smile and welcoming charm.  God Bless you all!
Love,
Loretta

At a time like this, our first instinct is to mourn. Our hearts are heavy. On a day that is commemorated for its violent loss of life, Rita departed this world and entered into one filled with peace and everlasting life.

It feels so cliche to say Rita was special. She was so much more than that. Rita taught us so many important life lessons. She demonstrated tremendous strength and courage in the face of adversity, and served as an extraordinary inspiration to others. She lived life to the fullest, radiating more joy in an instant that some do in a lifetime. Her smile was infectious.

To Rita’s family, we offer our deepest sympathy. We honor and celebrate her effusive spirit; we will remember her as a woman of incredible strength and eternal joy.

Much like the day she chose to depart this earth, Rita leaves an indelible footprint on the world we know. She will live on in our hearts forever.
