Richard L. Bergey, 75

October 21, 2016

Richard L. Bergey, 75, of Lititz, PA passed away on October 21st in Lititz, PA. He was the husband of Evelyn M. (Vines) Bergey to whom he was married for 54 years.
Born in Philadelphia, PA he was the son of the late Elmer and Mabel Davidheiser Bergey. After studying history and stroking the lightweight crew at the University of Pennsylvania, class of 1962, Richard taught junior and senior high school Social Studies and coached both JV football and Varsity crew for Lower Merion school district. He then changed careers and worked for 36 years in the banking industry where he specialized in commercial lending. He was a member of the Lititz United Methodist Church. He founded the Lititz Library “Great Decisions” discussion group and volunteered with many different community groups. He was an active member of the Hammer Creek Watershed Association and Trout Unlimited.
Richard’s wife, friends, children and grandchildren cherish many fond memories of Richard in his preferred environment: on the water- fishing, wading and boating. His interest in sport extended to his children and they all appreciated the time, energy and encouragement he offered them in their own athletic pursuits. He coached them all at various times during their childhoods, taught them to shoot baskets and catch balls. Shortly after dawn, he could be found on the Susquehanna River, shouting instruction through a bullhorn to the Franklin and Marshall Crew, to whom he also offered his services as a volunteer coach.
Later in his life he truly enjoyed his grandchildren. He taught them to bait a hook and cast a line. He and Evelyn were their biggest supporters as they cheered on many sidelines and sat in seats during innumerable concerts and recitals, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Field Hockey, and Lacrosse events. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed sharing his extensive library with others. His lap was always welcoming to his little children and grandchildren during scary movie watching, bad feeling soothing, or simple relaxing. He never missed an opportunity to offer a funny quip, one liner, pun or joke. He buoyed the people around him and was surrounded by smiles.
In addition to his wife Evelyn, he is survived by his three daughters Dr. Elizabeth Bergey (Dr. Brian McInroy) of Mechanicsburg, PA, Ronda Bonner (Kevin Bonner) of Churchville, PA and Julie Faries (David Faries) of Chesterfield, VA; Grandchildren PFC Douglas Richard McInroy, Jaimie and Brice McInroy, Haley and Dana Bonner, Whitney, Austyn, and Daniel Faries.
Celebration of his life will be held Saturday, October 29, 2016 with visitation 10 AM, memorial service at 11AM with lunch to follow to be held at the Lititz Methodist Church, 201 Market St. Lititz, PA 17543. Interment will be held privately. Memorial contributions may be made to United Methodist Relief Fund (UMCOR) or The Mennonite Disaster Relief in his memory.

Condolences to the Family

I was World History student of Mr. Bergey at Harriton High School and coxswain of Harriton’s Varsity Eight and Varsity Four under his outstanding coaching.  Now I’m a retired educator myself after many years of teaching English and serving as Headmaster at schools in both the United States and Switzerland.  I have had many outstanding teachers over the years, but Richard Bergey was definitely the very finest and did the most to shape my character and self confidence.

To Evie and the rest of Dick’s family, you are in our thoughts and prayers in this time of grieving his loss.  He has long been a close friend, as has Evie.  We will always cherish the memories of fishing trips spent with Evie and Dick and our good friend Joe.  Dick was one of the most deeply thoughtful and considerate people we have ever known.  As John Prine wrote and sang, hopefully, Dick and all of us will all “go whistling and fishing in Heaven” one of these days.
All our love,
Kathy & David Scranton

My deepest sympathies go out to the Bergey family.  May fond memories of your husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather bring you comfort during this difficult time.  Dick was a wonderful man who will be missed by so many.  I was honered to call him my mentor and friend. He taught me so many things during our time working together in the banking industry, some of which I cannot repeat because he would be upset with me.  Not that it was anything terrible, just a few mild German expletives.  I will however share that you will never be able to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear but not what 2:30 means.  Honestly, ever time someone tells me it is 2:30, I think of Dick.  I will always be greatful to Dick for all he has done for me and for his friendship.  Rest in peace Mr. B.
Love, Deb Micka
