Richard Arlington Lovell, Ph.D., 84

September 27, 2014

Richard Arlington Lovell, Ph.D., of Lancaster, was called home to God on September 27 at Lancaster General Hospital, from complications following hip surgery. He was 84. He was married to Joanne (Walsh) Lovell for 48 years.

Born August 4, 1930 in Kentland, Indiana, Dr. Lovell graduated from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, with a B.S. and M.S. in Biochemistry. He was also a member of the Society of Jesus for ten years. During that time he earned a Ph.D. in Neurochemistry from McGill University, leading to a long career in pharmaceutical research, most notably at the Ciba-Geigy Corporation in Summit, New Jersey, from 1975-1993.

After early retirement and relocation to Lancaster County, Dr. Lovell continued his education, receiving a Master’s degree in Theology in 1996 from Villanova University. Throughout his life, he was a devoted Roman Catholic and voracious self-educator who approached matters of both faith and reason with equal enthusiasm. He continued to pursue these interests in his later years through heavy involvement in adult faith formation at St. Mary’s Church, working with small Christian communities, and volunteering his time in the chaplain’s office at a local hospital.

In addition to his beloved wife, Dr. Lovell is survived by six children: Luke R. Lovell, Maria T. Hey (husband John), Jude J. Lovell (wife Kelly), John F. Lovell (wife Alix), Andrew P. Lovell (wife Kathryn), Alice M. Kelly (husband Jeffrey); and 18 beautiful grandchildren. Dr. Lovell was pre-deceased by siblings Joanne Schweik, Jeanne Lemen, Donna Salla, and Leonard Lovell; and is survived by sister Dolores Fleming and sister-in-law Catherine Lovell.

A viewing will be held at Historic St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 119 S. Prince Street, Lancaster, on Friday, October 3, at 9:00 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dr. Lovell’s memory may be made to: National Parkinson Foundation, Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 5018, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5018.

“Voracious self-educator who approached matters of both faith and reason with equal enthusiasm”–that really hit home with me. That light in his eye when he talked about both. To all of you, and especially Aunt Joanne, I’m thinking with joy and shared sorrow about your deeply loving family, and I’m so grateful for him and for you.

As brief but intimate my interaction was with your family, I was honored to witness the grace and pure love that you surrounded your father and husband with as he transitioned to the place of only grace and pure love, many blessings to you as you continue this journey.  In peace, Tara Yount (your nurse)
