Mary Ann Griscom, 61

Mary Ann (Patten) Griscom, 61, of Lancaster died peacefully among her family after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease at Hospice and Community Care, Lancaster on November 25th.  Mary Ann was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.  She gave her up her dreams of becoming a painter to be a full-time housewife and mother before going to college and earning a bachelor’s degree in Special Education and graduating with honors in the same class as her daughter.

Mary Ann was a loving and generous person who would do anything for family, friends and strangers. She was cited for her contributions to the Disabled Veterans of America Foundation as well as many other charitable causes.  Mary Ann was employed by the FBI in the Finger Print Identification Division for several years and was an accomplished secretary, cook, seamstress, gardener and painter however her number one priority was always her family. She supported her husband’s career for the 43 years of their marriage, serving as the “first lady” of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology for the last 15 years.

Mary Ann was born on July 21, 1951 in Woodstown, NJ to Marie and Philip Patten.  She is survived by her husband, William E. Griscom of Lancaster and two sisters and two brothers all of Woodstown, NJ: Joanne Grover; Elena Colubriale; Sebastian Patten; and Joseph Patten. She is also survived by her daughter, Sonja Y. Helman and her husband, Terry Helman of Owings Mills, MD and son William E. Griscom, Jr. of Lancaster and his wife, Amy Griscom and their three daughters: Olivia Fox; Penelope Rose; and Charlotte Lynn. She was pre-deceased by her sister Rosemary Patten.

A viewing will be held at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory at 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543 on Friday, November 30th from 9:00am to 11:00am followed by a brief service to be presided over by her cousin, Deacon Joseph Lopes. Interment will at approximately 2:30pm at Saint Joseph’s Cemetery, 300 Paulsboro Road, Swedesboro, NJ 08085.  In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Thank God Fund of the Thaddeus Stevens Foundation, 740 East End Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17602-3714. Bill and family and Patten family,
Even though time has created distance between us, I still think of Mary Ann and all the time she spent with our family fooling everyone into thinking we had another sister.  We had some great times.  I am so sorry to hear of your loss.  She will be missed.
Love,
Cousin Mary Rivell

Sonja and family,
I was so sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. Wow, I have many good memories of being in your home and talking to your mom.  She was so sweet and always encouraging.  She was a beautiful person inside and out and I feel blessed to have been a part of your lives.

Love You,
Jennifer Freeman and family.

Dear Billy (Bill);  I was so sorry to hear of Mary Ann’s passing.  I remember meeting her one year when we (my husband Jerry & I) were living in Arlington, VA & went over to visit your Mom & Dad.  I don’t remember if it was before or after ya’ll were married. Would have been in 1966-67 or 68, I just remember I really liked her.  She was so nice.  I will take your email address home with me & try to send you an email.  You and your family are in my prayers.  Love,
your cousin Patricia Shoemake Carter.

Bill,
We are so sorry to hear about the loss of your wife Mary Ann. She had the ability to make one feel welcome and was a gracious hostess. The obituary was a fine tribute to her.

Sonja, Bill and Dr. Griscom,

I can not express my deepest sorrow in the loss of such a jewel as Mary.  That certainly describes exactly what she was to your immediate family and those of us Sonja dragged home throughout highschool and onward.  She was the mother I wish I had.  She always had a hug and words of encouragement for me just when I needed them most.

She radiated when she smiled which was often and I can still hear her voice even when she was angry she could never sound so. She was just too sweet and generous she could never be taken seriously when we were getting in trouble for being too loud or spilling something all over the place.

The world dimmed a great deal the day she passed away.  But she touched so many of us with her light that her memory and light will still shine on through us.  I know as I write this, I think of her and I have no sadness.  My heart burns bright with love and the light that she gave to me in her short time with us here.  She will be missed but I will hold a piece of her in my soul forever as I am sure many more will testify the same.

We were all lucky and better people to have known here.
Much love
Angela Sermo Hammonds
