M. Isabel Shope, 92

M. Isabel (Hassler) Shope, 92, of Whitehall, formerly a resident of East Petersburg for 58 years, passed away Thursday, February 10, 2011 at Fellowship Manor Nursing Home. She was the wife of Francis Carl Shope who died in 1966. Born in Penbrook, she was the daughter of Charles Blaine and Mary Elizabeth (Madder) Hassler. She was a graduate of John Harris High School, Harrisburg Class of 1937 and was a member of their girl’s varsity basketball team. She was a homemaker for many years before working for the Hempfield School District until her retirement in 1983. Isabel was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Whitehall, and a former member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, East Petersburg.

Isabel was an avid pinochle player who enjoyed spirited games with her family and friends. She was a dedicated Phillies fan who loved to sit on her porch on summer nights and listen to games on the radio. She was a big Penn State and Eagles fan and enjoyed watching every game. She loved horses and enjoyed equestrian events. Isabel was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Mount Joy. But most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, James Carl Shope and his wife Kathleen of Laurys Station, PA. She is also survived by six grandchildren, (F. Charles Shope II, John Shope, Rebecca Angley, Matthew Shope, Andrew Shope and Michelle Ferenchak) and their families, 12 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great granddaughter. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sons, Francis Charles Shope, Richard Lee Shope and his wife Constance and her brother, Ronald Hassler and his wife Janet.

Funeral Services will be held at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz PA on Monday, February 14, 2011 at 11:00AM with Rev. Mary Margaret Ruth officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 10-11:00AM. Interment will follow at Willow Grove Cemetery, Linglestown, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Isabel’s memory to Zion Evangelical Lutheran church, 1905 Broad Street, East Petersburg, PA 17520 or to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 4331 Main Street, Whitehall, PA 18052.
