Luitpold J. “Lou” Liebl, 81

Loving Husband and Father Luitpold J. “Lou” Liebl, 81, of Lancaster died Thursday, December 8, 2016 at Hospice & Community Care in Mt. Joy. He was the loving husband of Genevieve (Napolitan) Liebl to whom he was married to for 55 years.
Born in Lancaster he was the son of the late Luitpold and Marie (Caldwell) Liebl. Lou was a graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School and worked for F.W. Woolworth Company for 23 years as a warehouseman and also was a career 23 year US Marine Corps officer serving in Korea and Vietnam and retired with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was awarded the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and also a commendation as a rifle and pistol sharpshooter. Lou was a very devout catholic and a member of the Church of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Ephrata. He and his wife Genevieve enjoyed world travel to Taiwan, Okinawa, Vietnam, Japan, Bavaria, Germany, Italy, Spain, Prague and Vienna. Lou’s hobbies included ham radio, birdwatching, fishing and shooting pool on various pool teams. He also was an avid reader and music fan of music from country music to his favorite opera music by Turandot. Lou had a great personality and had a wonderful sense of humor and was a very outgoing, loving, faith-filled, compassionate, kind person. He enjoyed reminiscing about his days in the military and was very proud of each of his grandchildren’s accomplishments. Lou was a member of the Fr. Joseph Daley 4191 Council of the Knights of Columbus and a 4th degree member of the Santa Maria Assembly.
In addition to his wife, Genevieve he is survived by two sons Luitpold J. Liebl, Jr. husband of Susan of Lancaster and Michael G. Liebl husband of Cheryl of Ephrata; two daughters Cynthia A. Schannauer and Michelle R. Quirion both of Ephrata; 11 grandchildren Katelyn, Katherine, Amanda, Kristy, Kelly, Kay, Kandice, Scott, Conrad, Gabrielle and Olivia; two step-grandchildren Brian and Michael; two great-grandchildren Ethan and Ava; one brother John Liebl of Hagerstown, MD and two canine grand dogs Maggie and Moose. He was preceded in death by a brother Francis Liebl and a sister Patricia Kaulfold.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 11AM from the Church of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, 320 Church Ave. Ephrata, PA 17522 with Fr. John McLoughlin, CSSR as celebrant. Interment with military honors will be held privately at the convenience of his family at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. A viewing will be held from Monday evening from 7-8PM from the Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543 with the 4th degree honor guard from the Santa Maria Assembly. The Rosary will be recited at 8pm in the funeral home. There will be no viewing or visitation at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Benevolence Society at the Church of Our Mother of Perpetual Help at the above listed address in his memory.

Lou will be greatly missed by the staff and patients here at Davita.  He always had a way about him that could brighten the day; he was such a sweet sweet man.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs. Liebl and family.
