L. Lorraine Smythe, 96

May 11, 2015

L. Lorraine Smythe passed from this life into the presence of her Savior on May 11, 2015. She was 96 years old. Lorraine was born in Lancaster, PA on December 31, 1918, and married her high school sweetheart, Granville D. Smythe on July 31, 1937. To this union two children were born, Granville D. Smythe, Jr. (Charlene) of Longmont, CO, and Bonnie L. Hess (Robert) of Escondido, CA.
She was a loving wife and devoted mother and spent her whole life caring for her family and others. She was a Christian woman and served her Lord faithfully as an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, and later at Grace Baptist Church, and then Brethren Village Chapel. She treated others with care and respect and used those gifts as she served the public many years at Watt & Shand department store and Fulton Bank. In 1989 she and her husband moved to Brethren Village where she lived for the past 26 years. She gave generously of her time and resources volunteering at Brethren Village. Her husband preceded her in death on September 19, 1991. She is survived by her two children and their spouses, four grandchildren and their spouses, and nine great grandchildren.
The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude for the loving care and support provided their Mom by her “other kids” Bob and Sue Radocy, Joan Gabriel, Nettie Hensel, and Marsha Vital as well as her friends, neighbors, and the Brethren Village staff.
Funeral Services will be held at 10AM on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Brethren Village chapel, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, PA 17606. Family and friends will be received from 9:30-10AM. Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Samaritan Fund at Brethren Village at the above address.

Condolences to the Family

My MomMom. The First L. Lorraine. She defined strength. She taught me much. “This too shall pass” was a big one. After more than 23 years apart, I can only imagine the sweet reunion she and my Pop must now be sharing. I pray my grandkids have the treasured memories of their grandparents like I do of mine. MomMom and Pop left big shoes to fill… and, with that, our family’s legacy. -Leah Lorraine Hess Pitchford

Bonnie and Grannie, wishing you all the best and many Blessings at this time. It’s been a long long time since I saw your folks or you both but my prayer is you are all well. Congratulations to your mother who served the Lord a long time here. It will be only moments for her until she sees you both again. Blessings, Robert Horning.

My condolences in the loss of your mother.  I didn’t know your mother; however, in the early 1980’s I worked at Hamilton Clock Co. where your father was a plant manager.  He was a very kind man and a good example of what a manager should be like.  Many times over the years, I have thought of him and wondered if he was still in Lancaster County.

Many years ago, Lorraine wrote these words on the Prologue page of her autobiography “I have done nothing great in my lifetime, and am of no importance to anyone other than God.  When I am gone, I will have left a mark on no one, and will be just a name in the obituary column of the newspaper”…..my dear friend, you have left a mark on ‘everyone’ who knew you, including myself.    Lorraine was one of the kindest, caring, God-loving people I have ever met.  I will always think of her especially when I make her recipe for Lemon Bread.   My condolences to the family, but I know she is happy because she was ready to go ‘home’.     Bev Bender

Bert and Roy wish to all of Lorraine’s family our wishes at this time of your loss.  Althoug Bert and I have only beein here 19 years we have certainly grown to know and admire Lorraine.  The gifts that she had and shared will long be remembered.  Life seems to equip us with the gifts that we need as we journey though the stages of our lives.  May God grant each of you the knowledge that Lorraine left a mark on all the places she has been.  Remember those times and find comfort in knowning that you too are leaving your mark on the world too.  God’s Blessings   Bert and Roy Schroll, Cottage 8 Brethren Village.

I have lovely memories of Lorraine from the many, many times I waited on her at Fulton Bank. Often she would wait until I was free and would bring me cookies or other small gifts of appreciation. Whenever her son, Granville, was visiting, he would bring her in and we always had interesting conversations. Seeing her epitomized the bank’s motto at that time, “not just a teller, but a listener”. I send condolences to her family, and hope that tons of wonderful memories will make them smile when thinking of her.  Sincerely, Carol Minnich
