John R. “Jack” Herr, 76
September 16, 2015
John R. “Jack” Herr, 76, of Lancaster died Wednesday, September 16th after a tough fight against cancer. He was married for 56 years to Betty A. (Rice) Herr. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Albert L. and Katheryn Herr. Jack was retired from High Steel Structures after 42 years where he was a Supervisor for the majority of those years.
Jack was born in Lancaster and graduated from Solanco in 1957. He was a standout wrestler and football player for the Solanco Mules. He was a farmer and belonged to Future Farmers of America until he started his career at High. No one could rake or shovel better, and he became an avid “lawn and gardener” over the years.
Jack gave all his love and support to his wife whom he called Boo-Boo. He was instrumental in helping her start and maintain her business, Madison on Marietta in Lancaster.
Jack was strong (he was a member of the 400 pound bench club) and loved life and his family and friends. He was a man with 9 lives and an unbelievable desire to live. He was an avid sports fan who coached Little League football and baseball in the 70’s and continued to follow his son and grandchildren in sports and academics during his life. He was passionate about exercise and inspired family, neighbors, and friends throughout his life. When asked how he was feeling during his battle with cancer, Jack never complained, but instead could be heard saying “One Day at a Time” and “Day by Day” He never gave up and rode his exercise bike and lifted weights until the end.
Jack was “A man’s man” and although it was sometimes tough to break into his inner circle, once you were accepted, he was your best supporter for life. He was brutally honest, but you always knew where you stood.
Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, Rick, husband of Connie, Lititz; grandchildren Cody and Maddie and many nieces and nephews.
Thanks to Lancaster Cancer Center, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Hospice.
Services will be private and held at the convenience of his family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice and Community Care of Mount Joy. A gathering in Jack’s honor will be held later this year. A service announcement will be posted at a future date.
