Irwin L. Hirsch, MD, 84

November 12, 2016

Irwin L. Hirsch, MD, 84, passed away at his Manheim Township home on Saturday, November 12, 2016. He was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Benjamin and Mary (Milikovsky) Hirsch. Dr. Hirsch’s loving wife of 61 years, Enid (Aaron) Hirsch, passed away May 27, 2016. He attended James Madison High School, New York University-where he played basketball and Chicago Medical School.

He is survived by three sons: Steven Hirsch, husband of Terri of Brea, CA, Eric Hirsch, husband of Rachel of Fanwood, NJ and Dr. Lorin Hirsch, husband of Renae of Lancaster; daughter-in-law Patricia Hirsch of Cincinnati, OH and 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandsons. Dr. Hirsch was preceded in death by his son Michael Hirsch.

After Medical School, Dr. Hirsch served an internship at Rochester General Hospital, then 4 years in the Air Force at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Miss., where he was head of the Family Practice Department. Upon discharge he and Enid settled in Lancaster as house physician at St. Joseph Hospital before setting up practice in Family Medicine in 1961. He served many years as Chairman of the Family Practice Department. He and Dr. Moncrief merged and became Family Practice Associates. His son Lorin joined their practice making him proud that his name would continue giving good medical care to the many patients and friends he cultivated over his 40 years of practice.

After retiring in 1998, he and Enid shared their times between Lancaster and Carlsbad, CA. When asked what he missed about his Practice, he replied that he only missed the relationship with his patients, not the actual practice of medicine. Dr. Hirsch was very proud that his grandson was becoming a physician.

He continued to enjoy golf and tennis until he could no longer participate. He had also played basketball at the Lancaster YMCA.

Dr. Hirsch was a member of Temple Beth El and various Jewish organizations and charities, including serving on the Board of Temple Beth El and the Lancaster Jewish Community Center. He previously served as Deputy Coroner for Manheim Township and was Medical Director at Lancashire Hall for many years.

Funeral Services will take place 2:00 PM November 14, 2016 at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA, followed by interment in Beth El Cemetery. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Hirsch’s memory to Temple Beth El, Temple Beth El, 1836 Rohrerstown Rd., Lancaster, PA 17601 or to the American Cancer Society 314 Good Dr., Lancaster, PA 17603.

Steve, Eric and Lorin,
My deepest sympathy to you and your families.  Your father was a wonderful physican and person to so many.  I was a classmate and friend of your brother Michael, I know how difficult it was for your parents to lose him so young.  Your father was very proud of his family and was an wonderful role model to all of you.  Please know that you are in my prayers.

Steve, Eric and Lorin,
I just learned of your father’s passing and regret missing the service.  Yours was a second family to me and Steve was a Brecht best friend.  It’s been many years since I ‘slept over’ at your house on Lititz Pk, I think of those days often when I drive past.  Besides being my physician, your dad was a welcoming and friendly bear of a man.
Peace to you all, Doug Baile

To the family of Dr. Irwin Hirsch,

Steven, Eric, and Lorin: I send you my deepest condolences, having just heard of your dad’s passing. I am very sorry and wish you all God bless. Dr. Hirsch was my physician many years ago when I lived in Lancaster, and you were just children. My late wife, Phyllis, and I were quite friendly with your mom and dad. I’m sorry to hear this news, God bless you all.

Dear Hirsch family, my thoughts and prayers are with you in the passing of a wonderful man. Dr. Hirsch was our family doctor for many years. He was always so kind and caring, along with being a knowledgeable physician. I am thankful to have been his patient. I hope you will find comfort in knowing that he had a positive influence on many, many lives.

Dr Irwin was our family doctor for many years until he retired. When my 2nd son was born (51 yrs ago), he came into the hospital to visit me and I was in a great deal of discomfort.  He put his arm around me and said ” I’ll take care of you”.  This seems minor, but at the time it meant alot to me.  He was the best diagnostician, he cared about his patients, comforted us, and was so reassuring.
Our deepest sympathy to all of the family,
Arlene and Terry Wilhelm

Dear Dr. Lorin Hirsch,
I moved to Lancaster 1963, and your dad was not only my Dr. but he was my friend. His practice was in his home. I trusted him and was never afraid to send all my friends we just loved him and I stayed with him till he retired. I was 18 years old and I am now 71 and I am still with your practice. What a great guy, he will be sadly missed.

Thank you Dr. Hirsch for the many years that you took care of my family. Much advice came with the medical care to us, a young family having had our first child. You helped us along the way for many years, we are grateful. Now to rest with your wife is a deserving reward to your service of lifelong giving. Blessings.   John Litwin

In 1960-61, I was in 7th and 8th grade and was the paperboy at St. Joseph Hospital.  It was then that I first met Dr. Hirsch when he became the resident doctor of the hospital.  He was most kind to me then as opposed to many of the other staff who must have always put their shoes on the wrong foot.  After high school, I enlisted in the Air Force and in 1970 married the love of my life.  When we moved back to Lancaster in 1972, we were patients of his once again.  So Kathy and I extend our sympathy and condolences to your family’s loss.
