Frank G. Scudner, Jr., 91

April 09, 2015

Frank G. Scudner, Jr., age 91, of Lancaster, PA, and inventor of a gas-tube surge protector, died peacefully at Lancaster General Hospital on Thursday, April 9,2015. His invention was used by AT&T for decades to protect telephones from lightning power surges. Frank was a WWII veteran who saw active duty in the Philippines and New Guinea. He was the father of 5, grandfather of 13, great-grandfather of 4, and the loving husband of Geraldine (Moore) Scudner for over 66 years. She preceded him in death in 2009.

Frank is survived by sons Peter Scudner, husband of Theresa Willner, Lancaster, PA and Frank Scudner III, husband of Victoria Remo, Womelsdorf, PA, and daughters Patricia Accettola, Suffolk, VA and Deirdre Westerhoff, wife of Bill, Farmville, VA, and his grandchildren Jeffrey and Alyson Luszcz, Brian Accettola, Amy Shannon, Cara, Evan, and Amanda Scudner, Sarah, Karl, Eric, and Benjamin Westerhoff, and great-grandchildren, Rosa and Eliza Luszcz and Natalie and Preston Shannon. A third daughter, Judith O’Connell, Sag Harbor, NY, died in 2012.

Frank was an avid fisherman and boater and member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. He loved to tell fish stories of the places he’d been, from the adventurous bays of New Guinea to the idyllic bridge of Sag Harbor, NY.

Born November 18, 1923 in Queens, NY, he was the son of the late Frank G. and Helen (Lucek) Scudner. His career began with Bell Labs in New York City after graduating from Brooklyn Tech. As World War II broke out, he volunteered and joined the US Army Signal Corps. His technical skills as an electrical engineer took him first to Ohio University and then to the jungles of the Pacific.

After the war he settled in Bethlehem, PA until retiring from Bell Labs in 1977 and moving to Sag Harbor, NY. His second career in the telephone industry was with TII Industries until 1985 when he and his wife retired to Elizabeth City, NC. In 2004 they moved to Lancaster, PA.
