Ellen “Dolly” Barber, 110

Ellen “Dolly” Barber lived to the incredible age of 110 before she passed away at Brethren Village on Wednesday, July 2, 2014. She was born in Eden, Lancaster County to the late Daniel and Ellie Kemper. She lived in Lancaster for many years before moving to Brethren Village in 2003. Dolly’s husband J. Thomas (Tom) Barber, who was the editor of the Lancaster Sunday Newspaper, died in 1985.

Dolly was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. She was a homemaker, an avid reader and she enjoyed taking care of the family finances and investments. She travelled to many interesting places with her husband such as Rio de Janeiro and Havana for his work. She had the honor of having tea at the White House on two separate occasions, once with Lady Bird Johnson and once with Jacqueline Kennedy.

Surviving Dolly are her son, John T. “Jack” Barber, Esquire, of Lancaster, granddaughters, Kathleen Morgan of Nottingham and Sheila Barber of East Stroudsburg, and her great-grandchildren: Bryan Morgan, and Kathryn and John Vallilee. In addition to her husband, Dolly was preceded in death by her brothers Bart and Elmer Kemper.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10 AM Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 558 W. Walnut St., Lancaster, PA 17603, with Rev. Michael Culkin as Celebrant. There will not be a visitation prior to Mass. Interment will take place in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater PA, 2595 Interstate Dr., Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110.

Dear Kathy and Sheila,  My condolances to both of you and your families on the passing of your Grandmother ” Miss Dolly”. She was a very special lady who had a wonderful life.  I am so glad I had the privilage of knowing her.  Please tell your Dad I send my condolances to him also and give him a hug for me.
